Brief synopsis of Evil Under The Sun

Peter Ustinov is Hercule Poirot, the master detective, in this Agatha Christie murder mystery film. An opulent beach resort provides a scenic background to this amusing whodunit as Poirot attempts to uncover the nefarious evildoer behind the strangling of a notorious stage star. Is the killer one of the many rich and famous patrons in attendance, or is the answer even more diabolical

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In this typically polished whodunnit adapted by Anthony Shaffer (who wrote Sleuth) from the Agatha Christie novel, Peter Ustinov makes his second appearance as fussy Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. You won't use up too many little grey cells figuring out who is responsible for the murder of actress Diana Rigg, but there's enormous pleasure to be had from sitting through the picture while waiting to be proved right. The stellar cast clearly enjoys itself, with Maggie Smith in fine fettle as the hotel manageress. Majorca looks hot, but it would have been nice if the producers had retained the original Cornish setting.

Variety

"...The action is swift....[The] cinematography is beautiful....Cole Porter's music is employed with good sense and tact..."

Halliwell's Film Guide

Very competent but somehow too bland package in the Agatha Christie series, not quite so lively as Death on the Nile.

A prestigious cast on a sun drenched island. Typical of Agatha Christie there are loads of suspects, apparently cast iron alibis and reasons why the authorities can't be involved and Poirot has to work alone - which he does in an idiosyncratic and flamboyant way - to a plausible and satisfying outcome.

I got this for my g/f but really enjoyed the plot and scenery. V good performances, especially from the late, great Sir Peter Ustinov.

Well worth sticking on your list.

If you like stylish, witty murder-mystery films with all-time greats like Maggie Smith, and James Mason, this is the one for you. It's two hours of sumptuous scenery and wonderful put-downs topped off with hats by Freddie Fox! What more do you need?
