Brief synopsis of Steel Dawn

They call him Nomad--man without a home, man without a past--a new breed of warrior trained in the arts of swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat, roaming the vast desert wastelands in a post-nuclear age--a time when laws are useless and water is more precious than blood. Patrick Swayze stars with wife Lisa Niemi, with help from many members of the Hool family.

Lovers of Roadhouse and Next of Kin know that Patrick has tried his hand at a bit of Kung Fu action from time to time, but few seem to be aware of this film. It’s not the only post-apocalypse martial arts film (think of Van Damme’s Cyborg or the Asian cult classic Fist of the North Star) but it still remains a rare foray into a genre which demands more attention.

A combination of Mad Max 2 and Highlander, it has a stock plot of the master swordsman moving towards a showdown with his evil nemesis; the martial arts are surprisingly good: in particular, Swayze does some nifty work with a staff. The plot is lifted by some Planet of the Apes style shots of ancient ships half-buried in desert wastelands.

This is really for the Patrick Swayze completist. A novelty item, Patrick is quite good but the general acting and direction is '80s tv movie at best. Patrick went on to do a lot better than this; the dated 'dirty dancing', 'tall tail' for the kids (much under rated) and the seminal 'road house' - a must see.

This one filled in a rainy afternoon, but there are so many better films out there...
