Brief synopsis of Jackie Chan's First Strike

In director Stanley Tong's action-packed film, martial arts megastar Jackie Chan (as a Hong Kong police officer named Jackie) battles on land, in the air, and underwater in his efforts to help both the CIA and a Russian intelligence agency retrieve a stolen Ukrainian nuclear warhead. Sent on an easy tailing job, Jackie gets more than he bargained for and is soon fighting for survival on a frozen mountaintop against gun-toting baddies on skis and snowmobiles. Luckily the chase sends him to warm Australia, but danger still comes at Jackie from all angles--including sharks from below. As with other scintillating Tong-Chan partnerships, FIRST STRIKE features classic Chan-style slapstick comedy and balletic fight sequences, including an unforgettable warehouse brawl in which his only allies are a stepladder and a broomstick. Chan's already incomparable legend as a daredevil stuntman is fortified by a virtually unbroken string of dangerous acrobatics and by the news, upon the film's release, that its star contracted severe hypothermia after filming a plunge into an ice-glutted lake.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Placing less emphasis on kung fu action (although it does feature an amazing fight involving a stepladder) and more on spectacular stunts, this Jackie Chan comedy thriller is a Bondesque romp shot on location all over the globe. The idiotic plot has Chan playing a Hong Kong cop who is hired by both the CIA and Russian intelligence to recover a stolen nuclear warhead. The chase to get the weapon and capture a rogue CIA agent winds up in Melbourne where Chan is framed for murder and adds the police to his list of adversaries. As ever, the storyline is a thin excuse to string together a series of breathtaking action sequences.

A typical Jackie Chan action film, not to be taken seriously but to be enjoyed for the panache and daring of its stunts, which are many and spectacular.

Variety

"...[A] combination of energy, invention and humor....There's also plenty of Chan's signature acrobatic martial-arts wizardry to satisfy fans..."

Also known as Police Story Part Four, I must confess that this is one of my favourite J.C. films. It is an attempt to put Jackie into a James Bond kind of plot, and in a strange way it works. Funny in parts, with the usual quality stunts. This film has a stunning fight when Jackie takes on an ever growing gang with a step ladder as his only weapon/defence.

The underwater Kung Fu is clever and funny, and the part when he is trying to escape two giants (for want of a better description) is another highlight.

He is playing the same character as the previous Police Story films, but this one has a totally different pace. If you are more of an action rather than fight fan, this may be the perfect Jackie Chan film for you.

very exciting - what a clever stunt man Jackie Chan is. he makes it all look very easy and funny too. Quite a difficult combination to achieve i would imagine. well worth watching - but don't try the stunts at home folks!

This is one of those typical Jackie Chan films - amazing scenes that he does the stunts for. It's fast paced throughout and is great entertainment.

It always shocks me that it has taken so long for Jackie Chan to be making main stream Western films.

This however is one of his traditional Hong Kong cinema films of dubious dubbing / acting whilst blowing you away with incredible stunts and martial arts.
