Brief synopsis of The Brady Bunch Movie

The popular 70s TV show makes a graceful transition to the big screen in this light-hearted feature that's part parody and part homage. The plot here (about a ruthless land developer who wants to buy the Brady home) is secondary to the playful juxtaposition of the Brady's era with our own. The film dotes on the peculiarities of 70s fashion and lingo with an almost religious fervor. The kids seem as lost in their wide-collared, pastel shirts as they do in their anachronistic moral universe. Marcia, for instance, is oblivious to the come-ons from a lesbian friend and she haughtily informs a date that she doesn't go to "third base." Several members of the original cast make cameo appearances.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In the 1990s, Hollywood studios desperately ransacked their old TV archives for cinema remake material, with very mixed results. This is probably the most innovative of the lot, even if it doesn't always work. For those who missed them first time around, the Brady Bunch were a cute-as-pie 1970s American family who suffered the mildest of domestic discord every week. For this movie the same applies — except that everyone else is now living in the 1990s. The result is a postmodernist hoot, expertly served up by a cast headed by Shelley Long and Gary Cole, and essential viewing for fans of flares everywhere.

Pleasantly amusing comedy that exploits the gap between the fantasy of family relationships and the reality, though it will mean most to viewers of the original TV sitcom.

Variety

"...A clever, engaging adaptation....Thomas has a wonderful cast of young performers....Best of all is Cole -- he makes Mike Brady his own..."

I have seen this movie before and liked it enough to watch again. This movie is good fun and a nice rental. Not sure if I would buy it but it is recommended.

Hilarious. It's nice to see a funny film which has no filth in it!

I loved this film, as a fan of the original series, I thought the casting for the film was perfect. I do recomend both this one and A Brady Sequel, I must warn viewers to avoid the third film called The Brady Bunch in the White House. It was awful.

Rated - 4 starsPolyester rocks!

Aaaahhh....The Brady Bunch - much loved TV treat from my 70's childhood. I wanted more than anything to be one of the Brady girls and to live in their funky pad in the sun. Floppy collars, clashing colours and polyester all the way. Okay, they were saccharine enough to make your teeth drop out and no family likes each other as much as they did but, hey, let's have some truly peaceful vibes on our screens, man!

The film takes all of the above concepts and turns them on their head, retaining the sweetness and the naffness and positioning them against a bored, cynical 90's viewpoint. It works - just. The humour hits the spot but is a bit repetitive. The film-makers wisely knew not to over-play their hand and put in just enough corn to satisfy rather than bloat the viewer.

I loved it - but then I still love Abba and bean bags!

Groovy!

Rated - 1 starsPainfully awful

I was expecting a comedy. Something with strong jokes highlighting the difference between 70s family values and modern day. Instead the film waded through excruciatingly bad one liners at the most superficial level. I was hoping it had hidden depth and irony (think Starship Troopers), but it failed to deliver in every way. If anyone reads this review and then rents this movie, they're clearly an idiot!
