Brief synopsis of Horror Hotel

Whitewood becomes the centre for a witch hunt in 1692. Two women are tried and convicted and burned at the stake. As their bodies burn the women call for revenge. Centuries later a hotel stands on the place of execution and a student staying at the hotel whilst researching a paper on witchcraft, is disturbed by strange chanting in the night and guests who only appear when it's dark.

This is a low-budget, fairly obscure b/w British horror film from 1960,starring Christopher Lee.The title used here is the American title 'Horror Hotel'; the original British title was: 'City Of The Dead'. The original ads told you to 'Ring For Doom Service'!!...nice phrase, shame about the film.Shame about the transfer too...it looks like a standards conversion from NTSC. The film is moodily shot in fog-shrouded b/w, but here the detail in the shadows is often difficult to make out, with some smearing to spoil the atmosphere created. The film contains some very poor acting, some badly written scenes...ripping off 'Psycho'...!!no less but on the plus side, the film does have good, sparse art direction. The film was, and still is? aimed at a youthful audience. In short: A slice of 1960's nostalgia,if you have a taste for it.

Rated - 4 starsTERRIBLE DVD quality

This fantastic classic of the genre is let down VERY badly with a really bad DVD transfer. Looks like it was taken from a video of a 16mm film source!

If you're expecting gore then you'll be disappointed. This relies instead on fine acting, a great script, and bags of creepy atmosphere. Christpher Lee is - as ever - superb, but really is hardly seen in the film.

Well worth a watch, just not with this DVD.

Not very good at all, no effects, nothing. One of the worst Chris Lee films I've seen to date.
