Brief synopsis of Seven

Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust--these are the seven deadly sins that are being punished with unimaginable cruelty and calculation by an enigmatic killer in David Fincher's bleak thriller SEVEN. Set in a perpetually gloomy unnamed city, the film follows Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a retiring police detective, as he experiences his final week on the job, reluctantly working with assertive newcomer Mills (Brad Pitt). When an obese man is found brutally murdered in his home, the seasoned Somerset realizes this is no ordinary killing--someone tortured him because of his appetite. Slayings that reflect the sins of greed and sloth soon follow, leading Somerset and Mills on a desperate search to find the mysterious John Doe, who is responsible for these methodical murders. As the case builds to a startling conclusion, both Somerset and Mills become more involved than they ever could have imagined.
After a brief opening scene, SEVEN immediately cuts to a highly stylized title sequence. An intricate collage of books and photos, scissors and razors, and blood and skin eerily captures the dark, graphic tone of Fincher's intriguing mystery. The film cleverly avoids depicting most acts of violence onscreen, focusing instead on the cryptic remains of the crimes, allowing viewers to investigate along with the detectives. An example of nearly flawless filmmaking, the movie features a meticulously crafted screenplay, brilliant photography and design, sure-handed direction, and excellent performances from the entire cast. All of these elements combine to amazing effect in the film's unforgettably stunning finale.

Seven is probably Brad Pitt's finest achievement to date. Morgan Freeman is, as always, absolutely breathtakingly good and top marks to David Fincher for an epic journey into obsession, the grotesque and twisted morality. Seven is a detective story - It is a movie about two detectives, with Freeman as the wise, learned retiring cop tempering the maverick, young wild card Pitt. The two characters are forced to work together by circumstance rather than choice and thus the relationship is, at times, strained. A killer is on the loose causing a spate of deaths (well, Seven to be precise) across the City which are related to the Seven Deadly Sins. The viewer is taken on a journey into the mind of the killer and into the minds of those hunting him - Well worth renting. If you enjoyed this movie - read Complicity by Iain Banks (don't bother with the movie version). Another sterling performance by Brad Pitt can be seen in Twelve Monkeys

The bonus disc carries little information about the title and is not worth watching. Should not be sent out as a rental.

Rated - 5 starsSeven Out Of Five

What can you say about a film designed to leave you speechless? That it entertained? That it had a plot twist or two?

Well, Seven is that and a whole lot more. Everyone is on form, from Morgan Freeman's informed and weary police detective, to Gwyneth Paltrow's depressed newlywed and loyal wife. But special mention must go to Brad Pitt. Often mistaken as a pupil of the Keanu Reeves 'to pretty to be a REAL actor' school, Pitt's acting abilities are often overlooked. Here, he is a standout, carrying the film on his admittedly broad shoulders.

This film has its twists, certainly, but it won't so much surprise you as completly draw you in. Far from watching the action unfold, you'll be as involved in trying to solve the case as anyone, and, as the seven deadly sins unfold in front of your eyes, each disturbing and unsettling in their own ways, Seven will leave a mark on you, and coming away from it will leave a hollow, empty feeling.

Only then will you realise the brilliance of what you have just witnessed.

The film is the perfect example of how to do thrillers! The viewer is thrown right in the deep end from the very start, and never allowed even near the edge until the very end which will stay with you long after you have watched it. Kevin Spacey is outstanding and even Brad (the male version of Cameron Diaz in my opinion) manages to pull of a good performance throughout.
