Brief synopsis of Soldier

Russell is a futuristic killing machine who becomes the target of a newer, even more vicious breed of killers. After a brutal confrontation, they leave him for dead on a semi-deserted planet. Once there, he begins to learn about the kinder, gentler aspects of life, until the soldiers return to put an end to him once and for all.

Rated - 5 starsDon't listen to the nerdy killjoy.

Dark, mysterious and thought-provoking, this film has to be one of the best short action films ever made.

The soldiers in this film have been robbed of their childhoods and this makes them into the fierce and emotionless warriors they have become. Kurt Russell gives one of his best performances in portraying the damaged soul.

Excellent action scenes and storyline. i would recommend this to anyone who liked Platoon, Demolition Man AND Rambo because this film is like a cross between all the classics and more.

Rated - 1 starsAs empty as space

Tod Butler from London, England , 07/07/2004

Soldier has got to be one of the least inspired films I've seen in a long, long time.

In the future there will be wars. Really bad wars. Bad wars fought on tiny sets with very few actors. All these wars will feature Kurt Russell in a variety of space suits and will show us, in a matter of seconds, the entire backstory to the film. Super soldiers, taught from birth to do nothing but follow orders and fight. Except they can't. In the brief scenes we are shown we see no hint of any military ability, other than holding a gun and walking towards the enemy. Except Kurt Russell of course. No wonder he's the sergeant.

But my real gripe with this film is not in the detail, but the agonizing lack of originality and excrutiating force feeding of the 'what-it-is-to-be-human' message. The entire plot is a rehash of some of Science Fiction's oldest and most used ideas: dystopian future of neo-nazi warmongers who care little for human life; soldiers dehumanized to robot-like automatons; mankind's unrelenting ravaging of raw materials (to the point where rubbish tips take up entire planets); tiny settlements of outcasts - the only ones in the universe who still believe in the wholesome values of peace, love and vegetarianism; one-man's-plight-to-save-the-inn ocents-from-the-terrible-ruthles s-bad-guys-with-bigger-guns-and- thus-salvage-his-humanity etc etc.

From director Paul Anderson, the man who brought us the excellent Event Horizon, I expected more.

Soldier makes me cross my fingers and pray for Mr. Anderson's forthcoming Alien Versus Predator.

Rated - 5 starsNon stop action

David from ipswich , 13/03/2005

Excellent.I have just watched this film for the 5th time and it never fails to deliver.Although this film is is over 90mins long it feels like it finishes far too soon.

Not because it is a poor film,it has so much action that you dont get a chance to breathe before the next scene.

When was the last time you saw a non stop action movie ?

Give this film a chance.Although he doesnt say much, his actions prove louder than words.

Old versus new, Young Generation vs Old Generation, whichever level you take this on it's a beaut....experience beats the ass off gung-ho inexperience and a young harry potter baddy wets himself in the face of experience. Off world rambo!!! A real good feel good film for those who don't want to watch About a Boy.
