Brief synopsis of Personal Services

A seemingly conservative woman and her clientele of kinky connoisseurs become daily tabloid sensations when it's discovered that her suburban brothel caters to some of Great Britain's elite. Members of Parliament, diplomats, judges, bankers, and even men of the cloth are all caught with their pants down in England's scandal of the decade.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

This is a gently witty, if curiously coy, attempt by director Terry Jones to re-create the odd career of “luncheon voucher madam” Cynthia Payne. Julie Walters is a good choice to portray her droll matter-of-factness about the sexual proclivities of a succession of middle-aged men, but in its jolly, almost seaside postcard approach, the movie loses edge and bite. Jones and co basically bolster up the one-dimensional image of Walters's character as a cheery old duck whose early life was hard, but rich in experience, while its truly sad aspects are blithely glossed over.

Rather astonishing study of British attitudes to sex; not for Aunt Edna, but with a fair measure of interest for many.

Rated - 4 starsA classic piece of film

If you haven’t seen excerpts of this film in reviews, I will be surprised!

Based on the life of Cynthia Payne (Madam and purveyor of all things kinky and sexual), it charts the rise of a brothel. Julie Walters stars in some unforgettable eighties outfits, and also in an interesting black plastic jumpsuit. A good evening's viewing.

I rented this film because Julie Walters is in it - I wish I hadn't bothered. I only got half way through it, then decided an hour was enough time wasted. Rubbish.

Rated - 4 starsAmusing

Julie Walters is excellent in one of her earlier films. The support cast are also good, each one becoming a friend by the end of the film. There are some very funny moments especially when Walters is learning the ropes of being a call girl pandering to some of the more bizarre desires of the male population. It is a comedy that we Brits do best.

A truly British comedy that shows what goes on behind the scenes at a 'luncheon voucher' brothel. Hilarious.

Rated - 4 starsBrilliant slice of British.......

Julie Walters will always be a legend in my opinion, but in this she really surpases herself. Its a brilliant study of what does go on behind closed doors and i think even if Miss Payne was asked she would also applaud the legendary performance Julie put in. A bloody good laugh, mixed with a scandalous true life story.

What else can you say? A fantastic little British film with the amazing Julie Walters, and a super cast. Well worth putting on one rainy day and just having a laugh.
