Rating of 5 stars out of 5 Radio Times

This multi-Oscar-winning classic, adapted from Thomas Harris's bestseller, was responsible for giving cinematic serial killers a better image, thanks to Anthony Hopkins's enthralling portrayal of Hannibal Lecter. So what if Lecter was an incarcerated cannibal? It was unprecedented that an actor playing a crazed killer should mount the podium to collect an Oscar (the ceremony host that year, Billy Crystal, was wheeled on dressed as Lecter), while Hopkins's “Fava beans and a nice chianti” line became legendary. Jodie Foster also won an Oscar for her role as fledgeling FBI agent Clarice Starling, who is drawn into a disturbingly close relationship with Lecter as she hunts for serial killer “Buffalo Bill”, and it's a testament to her abilities that she holds her own against her scene-stealing co-star. With a track record for directing quirky comedies (Something Wild, Married to the Mob), director Jonathan Demme made a seemingly effortless switch to terror, summoning up a magnificent air of gothic gloom. The hunt for the killer is genuinely suspenseful, but Demme generates the real chill with the probing mind games between his two marvellous leads. Spare a thought, too, for the talented supporting players: stoical Scott Glenn as Foster's boss, Ted Levine as the tormented killer and Anthony Heald as the ill-fated hospital head, the butt of the movie's flip end gag.

Tense, exciting and sometimes gruesome thriller, suspenseful enough to make you overlook its essential absurdities. Hopkins plays the role of the devious Lecter with lip-smacking relish.

Sight and Sound

"...A sombre masterpiece....The film creates a world drained of light, counterpointed by a sinister and unsettling score..."

Rated - 1 starsWhat a mess

Ok, this is a personal opinion but this movie is a shambles. Yes it won Oscars but that is no recommendation these days (A Beautiful Mind?!). By the numbers acting, no plotting, devoid of thrills and mediocre direction. Hopkins' Lecter is a true pantomime villain in the most terrible ways. Hammy and laughable, this could almost be Benny Hill up there.

Jodie Foster is no better. The "I'm scared but I'm FBI so I must be brave" delivery frankly disappointed me. This is an actor capable of so much more (The Accused for example) yet this doesn't stretch her abilities at all. Wanna see Lecter? Watch "Manhunter" for a truly terrifying everyman performance by a true underrated star, Brian Cox.

Rated - 5 starsGreat story, well told, and hopkins is simply glorious.

These sort of crime thrillers almost always translate well into film, however, rarely does one come out so well, It's fantastically told, even a pre-16 school leaver could enjoy the convolouted plot that never becomes too thick for the action buff's or too thin for those who like a little meat in their gravy. Anthony hopkins is superb as the deliciously demented yet refined killer Hannibal 'the cannibal' Lecter, who steals the show almost unfairly from the wonderful FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster). This is a gruesome intelligent crime thriler that will have you yelping away in a dark room on the very edge of that favourite chair, while challenging you too think a little too. This works as both a simple movie, to one that, should you wish, could be debated over a fine wine...just perhaps not a chianti.

Also see Red Dragon, the recently released prequel starring Anthony Hopkins again and Edward Norton, however avoid the movie version of Hannibal (the sequel) read the book instead.

The Silence Of The Lambs has become a legend among moviegoers as on of those films that you absolutely must see. It won the Oscar for best picture when it was released and it is easy to see why.

We are presented with the tale of Clarice Starling a fledgling agent at the FBI. She is tasked with finding a serial killer who has garnered the alias Buffalo Bill. To do this she must enlist the help of one Hannibal Lecter played brilliantly by Anthony Hopkins.

What sets this film apart from the average serial killer slasher flick is the dynamic that develops between the two. Hopkins is very sedate in his performance and oozes danger while appearing calm. We as the audience identify with starling and are both fascinated and terrified by this man.

An excellent film even though it does seem slightly dated but still well worth watching if only to avoid the choruses of "you haven’t seen that!?!"

I rented this film because it was recommended to me by a friend and I have to say it was a very good film. i had already watched red dragon and hannibal which are both great films and i definately recommend them to you if you like getting getting shivers down your spine!

I liked this film because it makes you feel you are part of the case. You go to Dr Hannibal Lecter to get advice and clues. The twist is great at the end and it is very tense but i won't spoil it for you.

Anthony Hopkins is outstanding in one his best films. Sly, sneaky and mysterious. Great film! One you will remember.

Rated - 4 starsBrilliant film - and Im not usually one for scary movies!

Sidney from London, England , 16/05/2005

An excellent excellent film, well deserving of its classic status. The plot is well constructed and the characters all highly believable. Completely terrifying in parts it also never forgets that it's job is to scare - not to tell a romance story or create a mystery. Perhaps because of this unfailing direction it actually manages to do all three without trying and create an unforgettable film. Watch it - just not alone......

*Top notch acting doubtless helps the film a great deal*

Anthony Hopkins is brilliant in this film - you don't know what to think of Hannibal. He is enigmatic and menacing, yet at times almost admirable. Jodie Foster is at her best, and you see her talent here in this pyschological drama; a vulnerable heroine. Great film.
