Brief synopsis of Ripley's Game

When British picture framer, Jonathan Trevanny, makes a disparaging remark on Tom Ripley's taste, Ripley plans a subtle revenge. Now living in Italy, when former protege Reeves makes an unwelcome visit, an opportunity for his revenge presents itself, as Ripley devises a plan to turn the innocent Trevanny into a murderer.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Following in the footsteps of Alain Delon, Dennis Hopper and Matt Damon, John Malkovich portrays charming sociopath Tom Ripley in this entertaining adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel — previously brought to the screen by director Wim Wenders as The American Friend in 1977. Ripley is now living a cultured, comfortable life in Italy, procuring rare art for collectors by rather dubious methods. When a boorish British associate (Ray Winstone, in an undemanding performance) asks him to bump off a troublesome rival, Malkovich sets himself a diverting challenge: to recruit terminally ill picture-framer Dougray Scott to be the assassin. Despite Malkovich's silky smooth performance as the unflappable manipulator, the film doesn't completely succeed owing to implausible plotting and the ineffectual direction of Liliana Cavani (The Night Porter) — her handling of the suspenseful moments renders them funny for all the wrong reasons. Malkovich may be at the top of his game, but he's the only one who is.

Splendid performance from the leads with atmosphere in abundance. Malk is as good as ever and Scott is compelling as the foil.

There was a simplicity about this film in the sense it had few characters and and uncomplicated storyline. You could almost tell what was about to happen but it was the way it was done. Great acting from Malkovitch and Winstone as usual.

Doesn't ask too much of the viewer and quite different from the 'Talented Mr Ripley'. It almost had a comic feel. Enjoyed.

Superb acting from both leading roles and supporting roles - didn't find any part boring and enjoyed the fact that it took the character from The Talented Mr Ripley but almost started afresh rather than trying to continue from it.

Rated - 2 starsPromised so much, delivered SO little

After hearing such good reviews and enjoying Talented Mr Ripley, I sat at watched this film with decent expectation.

Despite having John Malkovich and one of my favs, Ray Winstone casted in this film, I felt it never really got going.

There really is nothing more to add to the synopsis of the the film, that has already been given.

It wasnt actually that bad, but it really wasnt any good at all....but that is just my opinion

Rated - 5 starsEdge of the seat thriller

A very basic plot, based on the Patricia Highsmith book. I read it so long ago I can't remember how much it matches the original, but I found this film so enthralling I forgot to turn off and watch one of my favourite programmes on TV! Ripley is a psychopath (with a glimmer of a conscience!)who kills anyone who gets in his way - and gets away with it! I throroughly reccommend this film.
