John Thaw stars as Inspector Morse in another classic episode

Yet another superb Morse episode revoloving around the Masonic Opera 'The Magic Flute'. As murder and intrigue unfold, Morse sees a correlation between the events and the plot to the Magic Flute. Excellent acting as usual from the late John Thaw and Kevin Whately. Morse is in danger of losing his job and his sanity...will he prevail? Of course but I shall not give any of the plot away as it is so entwined it would be hard to unravel in so short a space. Luckily the Mason's do not come out tarnished by the story..

This episode opens at a rehearsal of Mozart's 'Magic Flute' in which Morse and a lady friend are singing as members of the chorus. The lady is enticed away and murdered. The subsequent chain of events appears to incriminate Morse and he enters a Kafkaesque world where nothing seems to make sense but he feels a net being drawn around him by an unknown malevolent force. Freemasonry plays a subsidiary role but the main point of reference is the plot of the opera and in particular the relationship between some of the main characters. Mozartian themes form an effective backdrop to the more dramatic scenes.Iain Cuthbertson has an all too short appearance as a previous boss of Morse's who later became a clergyman.

During the dress rehearsal of an amateur operatic production, a woman is stabbed to death. At the murder scene, Morse is found clutching the corpse and holding a knife... a classic episode of the Inspector Morse series finds the belicose chief inspector the chief suspect, as circumstantial evidence mounts. Unmissable,

As expected with Morse, this was a good story. Well acted, with an interesting if different storyline. The episode sees Morse getting framed for murder, and trying to clear his name. Aside from Lewis, everyone seems set against him, (or so it seemed)!. A good episode to watch.
