Brief synopsis of Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl

Loosely inspired by the a Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When camp Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.
Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humour to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

As this box-office smash is based on one of Disney's most famous theme-park attractions, we might have expected a shiver-me-timbers swashbuckler that's short on plot and long on action. Not so. It delivers plenty of both. With producer Jerry Bruckheimer at the rudder, this lavish Hollywood voyage into pirate country effortlessly fills its two hours plus as blacksmith Orlando Bloom and governor's daughter Keira Knightley fall foul of cursed buccaneers. The real treasure comes courtesy of Oscar-nominated Johnny Depp, who delivers a swaggering, slurring, mascara-wearing turn as rascal Jack Sparrow, a seafaring rock-star type and an irresistible comic hero. Geoffrey Rush also milks his role to the hilt as an archetypal pirate captain, and some superb special effects reveal the skeletal curse of the Black Pearl's crew under moonlight. This is infinitely superior to the ride itself.

Over-long romp, based on a Disney theme-park ride, that wears out its welcome; it doesn't know when to end and takes a long time to start, but in between offers a few thrills.

New York Times

"...An often frenetic, colorful and enchanting comic adventure....The dazzling, high-flying silliness is quite an achievement..."

Rated - 5 starsWhat can I say?

A customer from Suffolk, England , 07/03/2004

I absolutely loved this film. I had no idea it would be as funny as it was. Jonny Depp had a well-deserved best actor for this, and as for 'Gareth' from The Office as the pirate with the wooden glass-eye 'it splinters something terrible', what a character.

Good story, plenty of laughs, good acting, excellent effects, a real swash-buckling adventure that Errol Flynn would have been proud of.

Loads of fun and one film I will watch over and over.

You have to watch it.

Rated - 1 starsI don't get it

I don't get it. I love a family entertainment adventure movie and loads of people said this was great, but I was so bored I had to switch off half way through and finish watching it the next day. It looks great - the production design and the costumes are wonderful, but that's about all I can say about it. What I was missing was some real laughs. They should have come from Depp but I'm afraid he just doesn't deliver them. He's got his silly slurry accent and drunken sway, but once you've seen ten minutes of this you've seen his entire performance. It's not all his fault - the poor script doesn't give him much to go on. Knightley and Bloom are very pretty but dull as can be - again partly down to the script. The only actor who survives reputation unscathed is Geoffrey Rush who easily upstages everyone around him - it's just a pity he wasn't in it more. The plot is uneccessarily complicated - you kind of stop caring what's going on about halfway through. Where action sequences should be thrilling they're uninspired, badly choreographed, and just dull - with the possible exception of the final big fight sequence on the ship. The last 20 minutes are by far the strongest section of the film. It's a good ending, which is maybe why people were fooled into thinking it's a good film - it isn't. If you take a look back to Indianna Jones or Ghostbusters you'll find examples of how to do fantasy adventure movies well. Very disappointing.
