Brief synopsis of Othello - William Marshall

Shakespeare's keen understanding of jealousy in love results in one of his greatest triumphs as a stage play, and a prime example of his vision of the tragic hero is the obsessive Othello (William Marshall). This adaptation of the play features authentic period sets and costumes from Shakespeare's own era, and a simple, understandable style that distinguishes this version apart from others.

Ok this is a BBC version and probably filmed for educational rather than entertainment value, well I hope this is the reason. But if it wasn't for the excellent Ron Moody this could quite easily have been a production by the Crewe Shakespere society. Very staid and there was more wooden acting in this than any of Jerry Anderson Films. It's only saving grace was the fantastic performance by Mr Moody. He carried the film. One to avoid really

this is simple acting and talking! if you just want to see shakespeares words come to (almost) life, its perfect. but if you have read shakespeare's text you will be bitterly disappointed at the lack of passion and conflict.

This is the worst film of Shakespeare I have ever seen. The production is amateur and the acting arch and over-ripe. Are these people trained?

Ron Moody looks like he wants someone to kill him and get it over with (even he does stumble on his lines occasionally), and the less said about the rest of the company, the better. This film, from the music, costume, screnery and the ludicrous ersatz 'Elizabethan' acting with over-the-top hand gestures, treats Shakespeare as if his writing was dead. I couldn't watch all of the film, but it is rather mesmerizing in its badness.

The setting is a bit outdated, but the acting is very good and very faithful to the original text by Shakespeare. I enjoyed it anyway.
