Brief synopsis of James Dean - The James Dean Story

James Dean was a rocket too hot to keep flying, so his trajectory ultimately pointed him earthward where he crashed tragically. But before he flamed out, he made an impression on the world of entertainment and popular culture which only grows in magnitude as the years pile up upon his grave.

An early film from Robert Altman (co-directing with George W. George) it relates the now familiar story of the 1950s star, who died too young after starring in only three movies. It makes use of archive material in a way that tries to inject drama into the documentary process — there's a stylised depiction of the fatal car crash — but because there's very little revelation, the overall effect is one of a boring whitewash.

This is one far out documentary! Obviously filmed in the 50s, the (invisible) narrator gives the impression that he's floating around from scene to scene interacting directly to the interviewees; with rather poetic interludes over the 'clip art' image library of yesteryear.

I'd recommend this film to any James Dean fan - or anybody who appreciates 50s Americana culture. It's black and white (which adds to the retro-cinematic atmosphere), fairly informative, and some of the characters interviewed are priceless! (Watch out for Jimmy's favourite waiter in New York...) No actors were involved - it's a collection of photographs (some laughably teniously linked to the narration), real-life footage of 50's humans in action, and interesting anecdotes from the icon's family and friends.
