Brief synopsis of All Quiet On The Western Front

In 1914 a group of fresh-faced and idealistic German schoolboys are goaded by their chauvinistic schoolmaster to troop off to the 'Glorious War'. With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up, however, their disenchantment begins during the brutal basic training. Later, as they board the train to the frontline, they see first-hand evidence of the terrible injuries already suffered there--their first glimpse of the harsh reality of war. Once in the trenches, the boys begin to fall one by one

Rated - 5 starsBRILLIANT

A customer from England , 20/08/2004

At first this film opened with a war sequence which didn't over awe me simply because of the standard that has been recently set for realism in war movies by Saving Private Ryan. I was also asking questions because this was a `Carlton` production and I was unsure about the quality that would be delivered. I was wrong, the film turns into a terrfic picture thanks to the calibre of actors on show, the plot is also very involving and deep, it packs an added emotional punch too. So all in all a challenging yet sorrowful depiction of war, no Hollywood happy ending but war is not a happy thing - as said in the opening message. This film does not aim to be popcorn entertainment, it simply displays the horrors of war in their entiriy, unflinching. WARNING: Although this film is classified PG I personally think it should have been a 12 or 15, not for children.

Rated - 1 starsShould have been better

Given the time gap betwwen the original and this remake it was lacking in dramtic feel and missing an opportunity for the actors to provide a sense of reality. Whilst the original is dated and the acting and lines full of 'ham' this is quite acceptable from a film so old and quite in keeping with the period. For a modern remake to fail to build upon the original is possibly inexcusable with deaths coming straight from the theatre. Bring on another remake using unknown actors, the German language and subtitles.

Rated - 3 starsThought provoking and a decent choice

I don't usually care for war films, but this was pretty decent. It gives you the Wilfred Owen view point except from the other side. My eleven year old daughter also enjoyed this and it raised many questions from her when the film had finished, it is educational in that respect. On the minus side the annoying american accents just didn't fit.
