Brief synopsis of Battle Of Britain

A powerful, colourful and star-studded re-creation of the epic 1940 battle that took place in the skies over England. Surprised and understaffed, the British forces used determination and guile to valiantly hold off the superior forces of the German Luftwaffe in the early days of World War II. If England had lost, the Germans may very well have won the war. The incredible cast includes Michael Caine, Robert Shaw, Curt Jurgens, and Laurence Olivier, in a no-expense-spared production featuring stunning airborne dog-fight sequences.

This worthy tribute to “the few” has spectacular air battles, a memorable re-creation of the Blitz and a terrific cast that includes Michael Caine and Christopher Plummer. It is interesting today to watch so many great names in the twilight of their careers: not just knights Ralph Richardson, Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier (as the tight-lipped Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding), but also Trevor Howard (excellent as Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park), Robert Shaw, Harry Andrews, Kenneth More, Patrick Wymark, Nigel Patrick and Curt Jürgens. Most of Sir William Walton's original score was dumped and replaced by Ron Goodwin's, but a tantalising fragment remains in the air battles.

Plodding attempt to cover an historic event from too many angles and with too many guest stars, all indistinguishable from each other when masked in the cockpit during the repetitive and interminable dogfight sequences. On the ground, things are even dull

Rated - 5 starsExcellent stuff!

I couldn't resist checking this film out yet again. I've seen it countless times over the years, and I still love it! It's the best film of its genre by a mile, and its appeal never diminishes.

The cast is so strong, the dogfight scenes very well choreographed, and lets face it, where else will you ever see so many Spitfires in glorious colour in one place.

The makers reputedly gathered together such a large 'cast' of planes for this film that it could have ranked as one of the 18 largest airforces in the world at the time. The only problem I have with the film is that they actually blow up some real Spitfires....I wince every time I see those bits!!

After viewing the bonus disc i was disappointed that the disc stopped working just as the story was starting to develop.

A very interesting backround for the film both how it was made and the historical facts in the film.

Rated - 4 starsClassic Stiff Upper Lipped Britishness at its best!

Gareth from Manchester , 18/05/2005

I have always loved this film so my review may be a little biased.

Although this film may not really depict the 'true' horrors of war (for want of a better and less used cliche) the film is highly entertaining and records possibly one of Britain's most important (if not the most important) points in modern History.

If, like me, you are a bit of an Aviation buff, you will love every second of this film. Even if you simply like a good war film, The Battle of Britain will not disappoint.

Look out for the part where Edward Fox parachutes into somebody's garden for some classic stiff-upper-lipped Britishness - I won't reveal any more than that!

I would recommend this film to anybody.
