Brief synopsis of Fallen Angels

Killer is a disillusioned hit man, adored secretly by his beautiful female contact. Ho has a unique line in late-night shopkeeping, but little success with the gorgeous Cherry. Dazzlingly photographed and set to a cool trip-hop soundtrack, this is a violent, funny and surprisingly moving film from a supreme stylist of modern cinema.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Halliwell's Film Guide

A stylish, elliptical narrative about lonely people, veering from doom-laden despair to loud comedy; probably an acquired taste, but an interesting and unusual one.

If you've seen any of Wong Kar Wai's films, you'll know what to expect. If not, then throw away any pre-conceptions of Hong Kong cinema, because Wai's films are very European in feel. Heavy in atmosphere and style, but low on action and drama.

Although Fallen Angels details the exploits of a hitman and his partner, the film focuses almost entirely on relationships. There are some action sequences in the film, but in keeping with Wai's style, they're shot with handheld cameras, with plenty of blurring and choppy editing, giving a very dizzy impression.

If you've never seen a Wong Kar Wai film, keep an open mind and expect more of a romantic drama rather than a standard Hong Kong actioner. If you already know Wai's work, there's no further recommendation.

For a perfect double bill, watch Fallen Angels (FA) with Chungking Express (CE) - there are plenty of references in FA to CE and plot simularities between the two films.

My only fault with the film is the irritating Flying Picket's song 'Only You' over the end credits!
