Brief synopsis of Gods And Generals

This epic film from writer-director Ron Maxwell chronicles the early events of the American Civil War. It's a prequel to his earlier GETTYSBURG, with some of the same cast, and is part of a planned trilogy. Stephen Lang plays Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the famous (and deeply religious) Confederate general who, along with fellow General Robert E. Lee (Robert Duvall), must weigh the mighty consequences of his actions, as each battle costs the lives of thousands of men. Over on the Union side there's Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, who, like Jackson and Lee, is fond of making long, poetic speeches to his troops. Beginning with the start of the war and ending with Jackson's death, the film chronicles the three main battles leading up to Gettysburg, using their actual locations and thousands of actual Civil War re-enactors as extras. Maxwell pays careful attention to authentic period detail as he chronicles the minutiae of the generals' domestic lives in the intervals between the harrowing battle scenes. While a little on the long side, the end result should serve as an invaluable document for history buffs. Mogul Ted Turner was an executive producer and appears in a small role.

The trouble with this earnest, painstakingly accurate account of the American Civil War is that most of the participants come across as walking waxworks. The second in a planned trilogy — the first being 1993's Gettysburg — by director Ronald F Maxwell, it provides its lead characters — their names already heavy with history — with speeches that sound as if they have simply been culled from a catalogue of famous quotations, while the conflict's ostensible cause (to free the slaves) is given short shrift in minor exchanges. The battlefield scenes are gorily impressive and Robert Duvall is utterly convincing as General Robert E Lee, but the military stupidity of some leaders is monstrously skimmed over. There are numerous subtitles — telling us who's who, what they are doing and where they are — but biographical and geographical details tell us little of the human cost of war.

Rated - 4 starsThought Provoking !

A well crafted and thought provoking film.

Stone Wall Jackson is portrayed as the driving force of the Confederate army, his loss leaving Robert E Lee struggling and uncertain ultimately leading to his suicidal tactics at Gettysburg. This film does concentrate on the Southern perspective but that's due to it being part of a trilogy, 'Gettysburg' being the next film in the series (although made before 'Gods & Generals') which shows events from a more of a Union view point. I felt the battle scenes could have been a touch more realistic, this was the first modern industrial war but the horrific losses and carnage inflicted by mass produced modern weapons doesn't really come across. Visually the film is a treat, almost every scene looks as beautiful as an old masters oil painting. I'd recommend this film to anyone with an interest in history, military or otherwise.

Rated - 3 starstoo long far and too pro south

A customer from london , 18/08/2004

This is a labour of a love by the production team. However in trying to include every little incident which places the south in a good light, they have lost focus on what makes a good film. This is significantly longer than it needed to be. The battle are very well done, but nearly smothered by the rest. Propaganda doesn't make a good film. This should be cut into a more watchable form, until then worth watching, but have the remote handy to fast forward,

God and Generals is a great work of the film about the build up to the war.Great story line and acting, and the difference in cultures between north and south,a bit long for some tastes, but i recomend you stick with it. Then watch Gettysburg which is just as long but more action.

Rated - 3 starsA good sunday afternoon movie

A customer from Alcester , 08/08/2004

Gods and generals is a well written, well acted movie on the american civil war. If you are a fan of North and South you may find this movie a little slow going but if you are prepared to tolerate the over long running time, you will look back at this film with a sense of satisfaction. The war scenes are well directed and you do care for the main characters but why does it take over three hours to tell this story? When looking back on this story it is only one small part of the whole civil war. My advice is if you plan to have a free sunday afternoon you should watch this but if you are looking for an action night, give this a miss.

Rated - 2 starsDisappointing Re-creation

Lord Pie from The Gobi Desert , 07/03/2005

This re-creation of the beginning of the Civil War seems to have a modern sentimentality pervading it. Unlike Gettysburg, which was very well made and directed, Gods and Generals was most likely too ambitious in its attempt to cover such a large period in the War. Thus, the narrative does not hold well together and there is no sense of being invested in the story.

All things said, Stephen Lang gives a remarkable portrayal of Stonewall Jackson.

Rated - 4 starsCivil War Epic Fires All The Right Guns

priest1 from Dudley , 28/01/2005

Gods And Generals is a top quality production telling the story of the American Civil War mainly through the perspective of the legendary Confederate general Stonewall Jackson.

Superb acting, great battle scenes and excellent direction make this a must see for any fan of history. Do allow plenty of spare time though as it is nearly four hours long but it is worth it.
