To anyone that's seen Irreversible, this is the story of the old man at the start that opens the film with 'time destroys all things' His life is essentially miserable and pointless and the only pleasure he has is in sleeping with his own daughter. So obiously this film will not be to everyone's taste....

Rated - 4 starsExcellent acting, excellent story-telling

Following on from Noé's 1991 film 'Carne', this continues the story of the Butcher (although you don't HAVE to see 'Carne' to understand and appreciate 'I Stand Alone'). The Butcher even makes a short appearance in the later 'Irreversible'.

Philippe Nahon as the Butcher is outstanding. Imagine a kind of Ray Winstone type character, only more Gallic and much more sinister. This is great story-telling too, as we follow the Butcher's internal monologue as he becomes increasingly angry about what France has become, let down ever since birth (his father, a French communist, was killed by the Nazis thanks to the collaborative French). Embittered, he leaves his partner (in a horrific, stomach-churning scene) and returns to Paris to try and get some work. This is a shocking film (much more shocking than Irreversible) but very well done and an outstandingly good script. Probably the best Noé I've seen. But only watch if you have a strong stomach.
