Brief synopsis of Lion King II, The: Simba's Pride

Unfortunately this title is currently unavailable for rental. This may be due to the title being deleted or on a limited release. We will continue to rent this title as soon as stock becomes available.

The circle of life continues with a brand new story which finds Kiara, Simba's headstrong daughter, looking for adventure. She runs off to the Outlands, which are strictly off limits, and meets the mischievous young cub, Kovu. Despite the fact that their worlds are so very different, their feelings for one another begin to grow.

Disney has become increasingly conservative in recent years, with family values ranking high on its list of plot priorities. So, while Simba's cub Kiara is allowed a moment of juvenile rebellion, she's soon roped into upholding the big cat equivalent of civic virtues, as she teams with her new pal, Kovu, to prevent his mum (Scar's embittered widow, Zira), from toppling her father from his position on Pride Rock. The returning Pumbaa and Timon provide a little light relief. But the graphics are less luxuriant, the songs less inspired. Yet, it still sold well on its direct-to-video release.

Yawn. A slow paced, poor sequel to The Lion King. Maybe OK for older kids, but where my 3yr old (and I) loved The Lion King, we both found this one a bit tedious. The songs are rubbish, and don't seem to fit into the story at all.

Good to have female leads for a change, but that's about all I can say I'm afraid. But hey, I'm a grown-up, this isn't aimed at me.

Unlike many of the Disney straight to video/DVD spin-offs this one has actually had some time and effort spent on it. I only wonder why this didn't get theatrical release (except for the poor management at Disney in the last 10 or so years). The story is in sequel territory and the animation isn't quite as good as the original, but this is immensely watchable. The music and songs keep much of the flavour of the original and it all adds up to a reasonably satisfying watch for the kids, and you won't be pulling your nails out if you have to sit and watch it with them. All in all, pretty good.
