Brief synopsis of The Full Monty

In hopes of raising a few quid after their steel factory shuts down, a desperate group of working-class blokes in Sheffield decide to form an exotic male dance troupe, a la Chippendales, with one difference despite their, well, average-at-best physiques, they're going to go the full monty, meaning they'll offer their audience total nudity. Surprisingly bittersweet moments and well-intentioned social commentary imbue this raucous, feel-good comedy from England. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Academy Award: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

Rating of 5 stars out of 5 Radio Times

When the going gets tough, the tough get go-going, as Robert Carlyle — a divorced father trying to maintain joint custody of his son — forms a strip act along with a group of other unemployed Sheffield steelworkers in director Peter Cattaneo's highly engaging, genuinely poignant and hilarious full-frontal comedy drama. Well endowed with side-splitting laughter, mined by a superb ensemble cast, it's about men's emotional shortcomings as much as their Dirty Dancing techniques, and is jam-packed with many wonderful moments: the Chippendales of the North inadvertently gyrating to the radio in a dole queue is simply inspired.

Clever, enjoyable comedy about salvaging self-respect and baring all, emotionally as well as physically; it struck a chord not only in Britain, but around the world.

New York Times

"...[An] irresistible tale....Brightly acted and casually hilarious....It displays tenderness and respect on a par with its great humor..."

Its not bad I suppose, with some funny and warming moments, so long as you can forget you're watching a bunch of northerers with out of date skills in an area with no prospects, try to make ends meet in dreary council estate surroundings.

Seriously seriously over-hyped however. It was loved by the nation, but mostly by the North, understandably. An old mate of mine swore it was the best film he'd ever seen, and I had to wonder if his family had been rich enough to own a TV while he grew up in Leeds.

Fantastic film, filled with hilarious moments from start to finish, contrasted with some sadness and seriousness. The dole queue scene has to be one of the classic scenes of the 90's.

If you like 'brassed off' and have no idea what people from sheffield really sound like you'll love this film. If you like the idea of redundant steel workers who get their pride back by stripping you'll also love this film.

Rated - 5 starsA great yorkshire comedy!

A Yorkshire Girl living in N Ireland! from Co Antrim , 31/03/2005

This is British Comedy at it's best! It's Yorkshire humour. Watching it I felt that I knew the characters already - they were just like people I knew! Great fun - loads of laughs, just enough sadness, and a child star who seems real, not an obnoxious prodigy! Unmissable.
