Rating of 5 stars out of 5 Radio Times

One of the all-time great weepies, with a consummate performance from Bette Davis as the lifelong spinster emerging from her confining chrysalis into the arms of Paul Henreid. This lush, beautifully acted movie has gone down in the annals of cinema history for Henreid's lighting of two cigarettes scene and a tear-jerking speech from Davis, at her best in front of a moonlit sky. Irving Rapper's direction is suitably grand and cinematographer Sol Polito lights everything with an almost magical touch. A movie in which all the elements come together in perfect harmony to give an essentially hackneyed theme the imprint of greatness.

A basically soggy script still gets by, and how, through the romantic magic of its stars, who were all at their best; and suffering in mink went over very big in wartime.

Rated - 5 starsWow Voyager!

A customer from Leeds, England , 22/02/2006

I hadn't seen this film for years; the only thing I remembered was Paul Heinred lighting two cigarettes at the same time and passing one to Bette Davis! It was, in its time, the most provocative and sexy scene in the movies(I know, because my mother told me so!).

Age has not withered this masterpiece; the psychological games played by the mother are still harrowing; Bette is still superb; the costumes and sets are stunning, and the story holds up to this day.

It was a great way to spend two hours on drab Sunday afternoon.

Highly recommend you rent this. Buy a big box of tissues and some really good chocolate, switch off the phone and pay a visit to bygone era when people still wore ball gowns when they weren't even going out... fabulous!!

Rated - 5 starsPerfect Heartbreak

A customer from Leicester, England , 30/09/2006

This must be one of the most heart warming and heart breaking movies of all time, Davies is superb in portraying both the downtrodden spinster aunt and the newly confident Charlotte - a joy to watch that can bring on the tears every time

I absolutely loved this film! I didn't think I would as it was made in 1942, and old films aren't normally my thing, but it was so sweet! A lovely girly film, like a chick flick of the era! The leads are brillant, especially Bette! And the transformation from frumpy to fabulous! Love it, love it, love it!
