Brief synopsis of A Horseman Riding By

The first episodes of the TV adaptation of R.F. Delderfield's famous novel. During the Boer War, Paul Craddock is released from the army an invalid and accepts an invitation to become Squire of Shallowford, a rundown country estate in Devon. It's 1902 and Craddock (Nigel Havers) is getting to grips with his new job and renovating the estate, and once he's won the trust of the suspicious locals he finds a wife and has a family. Everything's looking rosey so far for Craddock in Shallowford...
Contains the first five episodes: The very first episode "Valley For Sale"; "The Party" where Craddock throws a supper party for the locals to celebrate the King's coronation; "An Outbreak of Romance" sees Paul marrying Grace and a pair of locals plan to marry too; "A Birth and a Death" sees pregnant Grace coming into labour; while in "The Storm" the Potter family suffer a tragedy.

I watched this series when the BBC first produced it. It is set at the beginning of the twentieth century up until just after the first world war. Its mix of drama and some comedy is marvellous and if you enjoy period dramas I think you'll love this one.

Delderfield was an excellent writer, this film does his book justice, I think its a must for everyone to see this time period of British history, today most of these places are run by a trust, this film gives an insight to a past that will not happen again.

Having missed this one the first time around, it has been good to watch it. Good period drama, which has been well produced. Well worth watching

I thought I had already submitted a review for this series. It is another example of t.v. excellence and based on another great novel by R. F. Delderfield. The first dvd of the series I have to admit I was a little disappointed but now that I have viewed the whole series I have changed my miond. I became engrossed with with the lives of the people in the Valley and would have liked the series to go on.
