i loved this film...it tells a story from different perpectives..one version has the main characters in a passionate love story..the colours used to enhance the imagary to symbolise the passion are red..this is the general theme...colours, beautiful imagery and spectacular fight scenes all come together to make a breathtaking film

Rated - 2 starsDogh! Wrong Hero!

I don't spellcheck from london , 08/12/2004

This is not the recent excelent film. It does have some interesting gore bits in it that you would never see in a western ganster film and some kung fu, but is wrapped in an appalingly flaky story line

Rated - 4 starsEpic Action Drama.

Ian Davies from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales , 21/05/2006

Cory Yuen Kwai directs this historical action drama with epic proportions. Based at a time of British rule in a turbulant Shanghai this is about surviving at all costs when you can't rely on the government and gangsters rule the streets. Takeshi Kaneshiro flees to Shanghai with his brother (Yuen Wah) only to be forced to fight to survive. Yuen Biao is excellent in a rare serious role. There are some great martial arts, especially the gory finale, and some blazing gun battles. This is an action film that may not be 100% historically accurate but it is definitely entertaining.

Rated - 1 starsHeroble subtitles

Ian from England , 04/10/2007

I can't really say whether the film is any good or not as I gave up after 15 minutes of the awful English and Chinese burned-in subtitles. I can cope with subtitles that have spelling or grammar mistakes but not with subtitles that disappear on light backgrounds and flash on and off so quickly that you can hardly read the first few words - a regular problem with Hong Kong films because the actors speak like they are on hyper-drive. You can also add to that subtitles that disappear off the screen because they are too long. I spent so much time rewinding and pausing so that I could read them fully that I got fed up. 1 star because of the cheap and nasty transfer that is more suited to VHS or Video-CD, not DVD.
