Brief synopsis of Kill Bill - Vol. 2

The second and final volume in Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL series is another stylish, sprawling masterwork. VOLUME 2 picks up where the first film left off, as The Bride (Uma Thurman) resumes her quest to track down her former mentor, Bill (David Carradine), and exact revenge. But before she gets to Bill, she must first take out the remaining minions who helped to slaughter her best friends and fiance. First up is Budd (Michael Madsen), a quiet but dangerous country boy who lives in a trailer. Next up is Elle Driver (Darryl Hannah), a one-eyed vixen who doesn't appear to have a heart--or a conscience. As The Bride makes her way closer to Bill, scenes from her past are revisited, including her training with the angry and brutal Pai Mei (Gordon Liu). Finally, The Bride locates her man, sparking a truly unforgettable confrontation. In contrast to the nearly dialogue-free first volume, VOLUME 2 is filled with extended conversations that bring the story full circle. Thurman is once again riveting as the determined assassin, while Carradine delivers one of his best performances ever as the sadistic title character. Director of photography Robert Richardson uses a variety of film stocks to great effect, adding even more flair to Tarantino's already eye-popping vision. Rounding out things is an electrifying soundtrack that features original music from The RZA and Robert Rodriguez, as well as songs from Shivaree, Ennio Morricone, and Johnny Cash.

Tarantino again raids old movies for spectacular moments and, unlike Kenji Misumi with the first two Lone Wolf movies (qv), is content to reproduce the past rather than adding anything new to the genre. Here, he also succumbs to sentimentality.

Rated - 4 starsStyle over substance, but I like it!

Another QT film. Slick as ever. Chick who likes to kill people gets revenge on the people who tried to kill her. Eh, that's about it.

Lots of nice sound, stunningly shot, some great fight scenes and next to no plot. I suppose it is an attempt to echo a genre which, frankly, most people wouldn't watch. Think Pulp Fiction without the brilliant story.

Entertaining, yes, but it seems that Quentin is losing his way a bit. Peronally I think he should dump Uma who ain't all that and a bag of potato chips.

Not nearly as good as Vol 1, shame, because the previous film was brilliantly structured. This just dragged.

A lot of peoople were dissapointed witrh the 2nd part, howver you have to remember it is the 2nd part of one film! This act is awesopme, spaghetti Western spliced with Eastern philosophies. truly and East meest West film

Mucn more subdued and chrachter driven than the first...but brilliant nevertheless

Rated - 4 starsRevenge is sweet

The first instalment of this ultra-violent revenge saga was a tribute to 70s Kung Fu movies. Volume 2, which picks up the story where part one left off, is more of a homage to the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone, complete with snatches of Ennio Morricone?s gorgeous music. This means it looks and feels very different to the first movie - not necessarily better or worse, just different, but still very much a Tarantino film.

The final face-off with Bill is surprisingly brief, low-key and poignant (at last the Bride gets to meet her daughter), but there is plenty of action before we get to that point. The dazzling swordfight between Elle Driver (the superb Daryl Hannah) and the Bride in the confined space of Budd?s caravan is particularly enjoyable. Other highlights include Gordon Liu in a hilarious sequence as the splendidly bearded martial arts tutor Pai Mei.

At more than five hours for the two volumes, the thin story is definitely overstretched, and the script stinks, laden with tiresome dialogue that aims to sound portentous but is mostly just witless. But overall, Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2 are a pair of supremely stylish, outrageously violent and downright exhilarating cinematic treats. Well worth seeing.

Rated - 4 starsBetter than 1

A customer from Kent , 03/11/2004

Brilliant. This is so much better than the first film, less weird cartoons and freaky blood spatterings. The plot all came together, with enough action to keep it interesting. Daryl Hannah makes a great psycho, and there is a particularly gruesome (but she does ask for it) part with her in it. I even found myself routing for Uma, who I'm generally not a big fan of.

I guess you need to watch the first film to follow the plot, but if you can get someone to tell you the story so far, give it a miss and go straight to this one.
