Brief synopsis of Around The World In 80 Days

David Niven is perfect as the imperturbable Victorian English gentleman Phileas Fogg who attempts to win a bet by circumnavigating the globe in just eighty days. The Jules Verne story on a truly cinematic and epic scale. Utilising 140 studio sets, 44 cameo appearances by Hollywood players, 8,552 animals, 68,894 extras, 74,685 costumes, a Victor Young score, and S.J. Perelman among the writers guarantee delightful family fare. The beginning of the film features a prologue by Edward R. Murrow, the esteemed television journalist, and features the first film to be based on a Jules Verne novel, Georges Melies's A TRIP TO THE MOON from 1902. A veritable pageant, with similar vim, humour and class acting as IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD, but with an esteemed production of period detail and exotic locations.
Winner of five Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Music, Best Adapted Screenplay and beating THE KING & I and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS for the best picture award!

Rated - 1 starsbizarre in the extreme, pure, smulz. (special features disc)

Around the World bonus disc is bizarre in the extreme, pure, smulz.

A vehicle, a `celebration? and glorification of one man.

Drum roll ?? Mr. errr what?s his name

Back slapping, and `oh what a great bloke he was?, it goes on ?. and ?on.

Wild, Weird, and vast parties, little walk through cameos speeches in praise of Mr. by people that look like his brother, smoking cigars, and praising him sometimes in a very insincere way.

One woman is so insincere she almost trips herself up in her own syrup, it?s laughable.

Monty Pythonish No real mention of the film or the stars in the film, that would detract from Mr. errr what?s his name the `SHOWMAN, and great all round wonderful bloke.?

Even Orson Wells rolls through and makes a comment.

Perhaps it?s just my sense of humour but I couldn?t stop laughing at it all (but I don?t think you were meant to find it funny)

Rated - 2 starsYou need 2 DVD's!

A good classic old film which unfortunately stops mid film asking you to insert disc 2! Therefore the whole film is on two discs, so not much point hiring it if you haven't got both discs!!

Rated - 4 starsAround the dvd in 25 sentances

This was all the rage when it first came out in 1956 and still retains it's compelling interest on dvd. The multitude of stars who play important but cameo roles is quite amazing.

The 'will he - won't he do it?' is maintained up to the last few frames and David Niven is the archetypal Englishman throughout. Cantinflas almost steals the show as the loyal manservant with his wide ranging talents and the film gives him a marvellous opportunity for him to demonstrate his many skills.

When you see the film in the cinema you are unaware that it is lengthy but it takes two dvd's to cover the whole film. Therefore be sure to reserve disk one AND disk two and don't make the mistake of thinking (like me) that the second dISK was just full of the extras or you will get the second one first like I did!

Highly recommended!

Rated - 3 starsThe story's still gripping,but.....

Christine Wibberley from Lancashire , 09/01/2005

The film itself is very dated and having 3D on the small screen means that the detail can't really be seen properly. I remember seeing this film when a child and enjoying it immensly, but it now strikes me as a series of short incidents packed into one epic film.

Hint, it would be a better idea to make it clear that the film is on 2 discs rather than call the second disc a bonus feature disc. We in fact received the second disc first and nearly sent it straight back as we prefer to watch films than trail theough the stories of the stars technical data etc.
