Brief synopsis of Congo

An African mountain gorilla who's been taught sign language by a young primatologist is returned to the jungles of the Congo in this adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1980 sci-fi adventure novel. During their journey they cross paths with greedy corporate scavengers searching for a hidden cache of diamonds.

Rating of 1 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Michael Crichton's novel, on which this adventure is based, tried to do for gorillas what his Jurassic Park did for dinosaurs. But, under Frank Marshall's bland direction, this trek-through-the-jungle adventure is a disappointingly old-fashioned affair that lacks any sense of wonder. The plot, combining a lost civilisation, a highly intelligent gorilla that's been taught communication skills and venal scientists after diamonds for a laser gun, is a lacklustre Boys' Own no-brainer, and the movie scrapes the bottom of the fantasy barrel in terms of credibility, dire acting and clichéd special effects.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Heady nonsense, a throwback to those old movies based on Victorian adventure stories; it is hokum of a sort rarely seen since the days of Nyoka the Jungle Girl.

Congo isn't so much a movie as a gigantic theme park, with the name of Michael Crichton (who wrote the original... Read more on www.timeout.com

Rated - 5 starsAmy Good Gorilla

This film is not entirely true to the Michael Crichton novel. They have added a few new characters and more brutal death, but less technology and realistic sentiment. A somewhat intricate movie about a primatologist and an acquaintance who possesses a gorilla that can talk (via an electronic headset) called Amy. They choose to go to Amy's native land to ascertain what happened to a team that set out on an expedition and hasn’t been heard of since.

Amy is a bit cardboard and Tim Curry’s accent is very dodgy, but if you can ignore these, it’s a very entertaining and funny adventure film.

Fairly enjoyable techno-thriller about the search for diamonds and subsequent fight with killer gorillas. Worth a watch if you're completely bored because it has a few cool action moments but nothing special at all really.

Shockingly bad film all the way through. It's a wonder I didn't walk out of the cinema when I did watch it. Avoid this big style!

Rated - 4 starsSurprisingly enjoyable film

I found this film surprisingly enjoyable, despite all the bad reviews it gets. The plot is undeniably very cheesy and the animatronic gorilla is not overly realistic, but it all seems to add up to create a charming and funny film! After all, it is better than using a real gorilla which could be cruel, and the plot is no more fantastic than films such as James Bond for example. Funny and enjoyable!
