Brief synopsis of Girl, Interrupted

Adapted from Kaysen's popular memoir, GIRL, INTERRUPTED is handled with extreme sensitivity by director James Mangold (HEAVY, COPLAND.) Winona Ryder stars as Susana, a troubled teenager whose confused attempt at suicide lands her in a mental hospital. Once there, she meets an odd assortment of characters, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), who at first mesmerizes Susana with her uninhibited demeanor. The pair form a tight bond, but that connection is threatened when Lisa begins to spiral even further out of control. Ryder and Jolie's intense performances are just one of many reasons to watch this picture.

Set in a New England psychiatric institution in 1967, this commendable drama from director/co-writer James Mangold has a similar agenda to Milos Forman's Oscar-winning classic One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, but never quite reaches the same peaks of poignancy. Mangold makes clever use of jarring narrative cuts to convey Winona Ryder's confused state of mind. The film is also extremely well cast. Oscar winner Angelina Jolie is mesmerising as a pushy, pouting troublemaker, and Whoopi Goldberg is also good value as a no-nonsense nurse. Yet there's a definite feeling the producers were hoping to set off brighter emotional fireworks than this well-intentioned but lightweight movie actually provides.

Anjelina Jolie is very good in this, in fact all the cast are pretty good and the story is well acted. This however doesn't make up for the fact that this film is just plain dull. Its very depressing and rather tedious at times and you are left feeling that there's something missing. I can understand why some viewers will like this movie due to its characters and im sure that certain people will relate with some elements of the film but Girl Interrupted didn't do anything for me. If you must watch a film set in a mental institution then look no further than Cuckoo's nest.

This was a hard film to watch, not because it was a bad one but because it brilliantly explores the boundaries of reality.

You may not be able to relate to the characters' situations but the wonderful performances by Winona Ryder, Angellena Jolie and Brittany Murphy help the audience experience what they are experiencing.

A definate must-see.

Winona Ryder and an Oscar winning Angelina Jolie star in this superb drama about a suicidal young woman's experiences in a mental institution. Despite the subject matter and a couple of harrowing moments this film is suprisingly uplifting, with an excellent line-up of female acting talent combining to make this a believable and thought provoking film about mental illness.

This was a great career move for both Winona Rider and Angelina Jolie. A modern film set in the '60s...a story of a young woman finding her path in life...or maybe "she" already knew what she was about, the rest of the world just had to catch up!

A story of friendship amongst a group of women who were, for one reason or another, sent to an asylum to be pocked, proded, analyszed or simply forgotten about. I would strongly recommend this film.
