Brief synopsis of Tatie Danielle

French master of black comedy Etienne Chatiliez directs this masterpiece of dark humour. Tatie Danielle (Tsilla Chelton) is a malicious, mischievous old lady who mistreats her (older) housekeeper to death. So she moves in with her nephew (Eric Prat) and his wife Catherine (Catherine Jacob) and the fun really starts. Their life becomes a living hell as Auntie takes control and drives the family to despair and close to insanity. They take off on holiday without the wicked one, leaving her in the care of Sandrine (Isablle Nanty), an au pair who is as equally bitter as Tatie herself...

This film may be culturally intriguing but it's not entertaining. The old lady just behaves foully. That's it. Not what I'd call stimulating humour.

This is an absoluteley fantastic film, should be watched by everyone. After renting this film i actually went out and bought it, i then made all my friends watch it. The film is about an old woman who torments everyone. Its quite weird but very good, its one of the best films i have ever watched. The Film is in french but is subtitled. Theres not much more i can say other than you have to watch this!

Rated - 5 starsCan't wait until I am able to buy it!

I saw the premier at the Edinburgh Film festival and oh I thought it was marvellous. Despite the pathos I laughed all the way through. This is what I want to aspire to when I get old!

Right from the start you know Tatie Danielle (Tsilla Chelton) is such a wicked nasty old woman. She feigns ill health very well but easily seen through once with her for a while. She does this when she cannot get her way. Initially, her put upon paid housekeeper endures this, until she 'accidentally' dies. Then Tatie Danielle moves in with her great-nephew and his family. She continues using her nastiness to manipulate everyone into doing things her way until the family have enough, realise what she is like eventually, and go on holiday to Greece and not have family to look after her but hire a young housekeeper to look after her. Sandrine (Isabelle Nanty) knows what Auntie is doing, and deals with her accordingly.

This is when it becomes a very touching tale for two people of very different generations eventually beginning to form respect and care for each other.

I could not wait to hire this and cannot wait until it is affordable to buy.

Rated - 1 starsunfunny unpleasant

I was misled by a couple of reviews into thinking this might at least be quite amusing. But no. The film had no subtitles despite being advertised as having them, but since the script is wholly without charm, subtlety or wit you haven't missed anything. I have reluctantly given it one star for being in French.
