Brief synopsis of Varsity Blues

Surprise hit high school football saga from MTV Pictures starring James ("Dawson") Van Der Beek as a star player and Jon Voight as his brutally gruff coach. While the coaches and everyone else believe they know what is right for the young star, he has other ideas.

In this teen drama, Dawson's Creek alumnus James Van Der Beek plays the high-school football player who challenges the authority of his control-freak coach (Jon Voight, giving another hilariously over-the-top performance) when he becomes the team's star quarterback. This is basically a 1990s throwback to 1980s sports movies such as Youngblood and All the Right Moves, with the usual mix of sports action, drinking and girls (the guys discover one of their teachers is a stripper), and the odd moral tale thrown in. It's predictable stuff and British viewers may find the American football sequences impenetrable, but fans of Van Der Beek will be in heaven.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Tiresome teenage drama of small-town worship of athletes that looks merely quaint to audiences not involved in such rituals.

"...Flashy gridiron showdowns....A pungent portrait of a small-town community in the grip of an obsession..." -- Rating: B

Rated - 4 starsBit Cheesy....but hey thats america for you!

Personally i liked this film, but I'm a huge American football fan and i think you need at least a small interest in the sport to enjoy this film. wicked performance from Jon Voight, plays the self centered coach brilliantly.

The film shows small town views on local sport, and how much pressure this puts on the barely 18 year olds to win championships, along with the pressure from their coach.

James Van Der Beek plays his role as step in-to-starting quaterback surprisingly well.

It all ends a bit cheesy, but its american! C'mon, what did you expect?!

Anyway, a definate must see for a football fan ****

This film managed to hold the attention all the way through and was entertaining enough. Some sections dragged a little and of course the american football movie has a predicable outcome.I think it was better than I expected though and it deserves its three stars.

Not the best film, but I didn't have to turn it off halfway through like many other films of this type. It has some similar ideas to other high school movies - football stars drinking too much and getting away with being slack in the interests of the team doing well.

Funny to see Paul Walker in such a film, after becoming so well known with Fast and Furious.

Rated - 5 starsA High School Fun!!

I thought this was very a typical US film, about a group of high school kids and found it very predictable. Although it was predictable I thought it was good it had some funny parts but also some drama where the coach of the football team (Jon Voight) goes a bit psycho and ends up quitting in the last match. Good acting from James Van Der Beek, Jon Voight, Paul Walker and Scott Caan. Is a well written film and worth seeing if you like American Football and predictable comedy/dramas.
