Gritty, downbeat, working-class drama in which London features as a harsh and soulless place where lives goes awry without anyone caring very much.

I love this film but find it hard to explain why!

I can imagine that you either love it or find it very boring indeed.

It follows the lives of a few ordinary Londoners, their ups and downs and their struggle to make sense of life in the big Smoke...

I found it very refreshing in that it gives a very realistic view of London and its inhabitants, without falling into the trap of over-glamourising the city (the truly cringeworthy 'Love Actually' springs to mind) or cheeky chappie East End gangster stories a la Lock, Stock.

It's just a touching little movie about the daily struggles we all encounter...

Give it a try!

Rated - 5 starsUtterly brilliant

This is a true revelation. The film completely passed me by in the cinema, and I only came across this one by accident. I'm so glad that I did.

This is a tour de force, a wonderful ensemble piece, where various stories meet and collide... OK, 'Crash' this ain't, but the acting in 'Wonderland' is certainly on a par - with Ian Hart at his best here, and a young (and extremely sexy) Sarah-Jane Potts stealing the show among a tremendous cast.

Everything about this film just works: but the star is London itself, majestic and sprawling, dirty and masterful. Then, there's Michael Nyman's excellent score throughout, that moved me close to tears at times. But this is a happy, feelgood movie, and one that I will be sure to watch again. Bravo, Winterbottom. What a wonderfully ecleclic person you are... porn, documentaries, sci fi, period... the man is a genius.

That a film about a weekend in London, a weekend where, to be honest, not an awful lot happens, to a bunch of characters who you would not ordinarily want to cross the road to meet, that a film like that can earn such plaudits, and move one to write so much utterly cringeworthy guff immediately after watching it, must indeed be a very special film indeed.

Although the wasteland of contemporary urban life comes over reasonably well the dire script robs the overall action of any real worth.

Watch it only if boredom is your thing, and you can manage to sustain the illusion - as presumably do the makers - that pretentiousness is a sound substitute for art (or even just plain entertainment) A truly dreaful film. Don't waste your time.

Rated - 3 starsBleak

Snapshot of a few working class Londoners doing their best to survive in an uncaring city. Drugs, drink, illicit unsatisfying sex, poverty - all combine within their bleak lives. It's not the most entertaining of movies but quite revealing in an uncomfortable sort of way. The whole of the cast are totally convincing especially the young boy who takes centre stage, surprisingly good turn from Keira Knightley too. Gritty but not a lot of fun!
