Brief synopsis of Sleepless In Seattle

Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) is a good father and a successful architect, but also a lonely widower. One night his precocious 8-year-old son Jonah calls a late-night radio talk show seeking a cure for his father's despondency. When Sam hesitantly takes the phone and discloses the story of his magic-filled marriage, he proves to be a deeply feeling and gentle man. His plight profoundly moves the programme's sympathetic female listeners, and thousands of women write in offering to help him 'recover' from his mournful insomnia. Recently betrothed Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) is one of the many listeners touched by Sam's story. To complicate matters, she's afraid her upcoming marriage promises stability and security but no excitement. Although Annie's supposed to be driving to her future in-laws' house for the holidays, she knows that she's already fallen in love with Sam and is on the road to destiny. She treks across country on a wildly romantic impulse to meet him...

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Nora Ephron, the writer of When Harry Met Sally..., comes up trumps again as co-writer and director of this gloriously old-fashioned and unashamedly manipulative romantic comedy. Tom Hanks, recently widowed, moves to a new home in Seattle where he just grieves and grieves. His young son, concerned over his dad's state of mind, calls a radio phone-in and when Hanks himself goes on air, he pours his heart out. That's storyline one. Storyline two features Meg Ryan, a Baltimore journalist who hears the broadcast, recognises a kindred lonely heart and starts tracking Hanks down. Hanks's son, played by Ross Malinger, becomes their matchmaker, while the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr weepie of 1957, An Affair to Remember, is always on TV and serves as a touchstone, providing the inspiration for the movie's climax at the top of the Empire State Building. For nearly two hours, Ephron keeps her marvellous stars apart, a potentially dangerous tactic that works superbly. In the summer of Jurassic Park, Sleepless in Seattle proved to be a box-office smash; the team subsequently reunited for You've Got Mail in 1998.

USA Today

"...Charming SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE manages to be dateless - as in timeless - as it pays homage to date movies of yore..." -- 3 out of 4 stars

Variety

"...[The film] delivers ample warmth and some explosively funny moments....There are some extremely amusing explorations of dating mores..."

i loved the movie youve got mail made by the same director with the same cast - tom hanks and meg ryan and thought i would be entertained by similar stuff.

the story lacked punch and the proceedings far from reality.

there was no reason to ditch Bill pullman.

Meg ryan was fabulous.

Tom hanks was wasted in an ordinary role.

dont go for a movie by its name

Possibly unlikely story line but gentle romantic and humorous film with good performances from Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Curl up on the sofa type film that leaves a happy feeling inside.

I've seen this film about 6 times now and still I cry! (I know pathetic woman!) But hey if stories like this happened every day wouldn't it be great!

The poignancy of losing your partner and then the loneliness. Oh dear I'm off again!

All Jonah wanted was for Dad to be happy. But listen if you don't want your life broadcast across the airwaves be careful what you let your kids listen to!

A lovely film for all the family.
