Brief synopsis of David Bowie - A Reality Tour - Live In Dublin

Filmed before an awestruck audience in Dublin on November 22nd and 23rd, 2003, this is a great way to experience David Bowie's REALITY album in a live setting. Of course a number of older songs are dusted off and given thoroughly modern interpretations as well, with Bowie clearly delighted to have such a welter of fine material at his fingertips. In fact Bowie and his band had rehearsed 60 songs for the REALITY tour, and drew liberally on them throughout the resulting shows. The 30 songs here comprise most of the audience favourites, and include classics such as 'Be My Wife', 'Under Pressure', 'Life On Mars', 'Heroes', and 'Ziggy Stardust'. But it's not just the oldies that the crowd came to see, and material from the REALITY and HEATHEN albums also receive a warm response. An electrifying, charismatic performer, Bowie's legend is well earned.

Bowie seemed to get lost on his way in the mid 80s, at the peak of his fame. He has never been fully rehabilitated in the public eye despite his complete return to form in the 90s. His album of 97, 'outside' is probably his best (dark & disturbing), while his last two albums (Heathen & Reality) are superb. It is these last two that form the bulk of this DVD, and I would defy any rock music fan to listen to songs like 'slipaway' and not be profoundly moved. Bowies voice is on top form and the band is the best ever. Maybe its my age, but I don't get roused by music often these days, so this dvd was a bit of a shock. Makes so many other rock icons look wanting (watch out Robbie Williams).

I went to see Dave in the MEN in Manchester whilst he did this tour. To be honest, I was in a sort of coma wathing him as he has been my prime influence through my life. Watching this DVD helped me pay attention to the quality of sound and performance of Dave and his band, because I was in awe of him too much at the concert. Well worth a watch.

I liked it so much, I reviewed it twice.

Bowie on fine form, with what has become his strongest backing band for many years. The songs are re-energised by his enthusiasm and constant need to remain relevant, the playing is excellent. Whilst the quality is unquestionable, some may find the whole experience a little too slick, and non-devotees may mourn the absence of too many 'hits' from the set list, but personally, he gets the balance just right, encouraging re-evaluation of lesser known songs. Bowie is the consumate performer who refuses to rest on his substantial laurels.

Overall, A triumph !

Rated - 4 starsstylishly presented audio visual extravaganza

live concerts can so often be boring to watch on video / dvd, but this was really well edited. Of course, it helped that the show itself was stunning, and Bowie looks unbelievably slender, youthful and handsome - almost alarmingly so (the friend I watched it with found the 50-something's boyish looks a bit weird) ! He is a living legend, so well worth a watch. The dvd could have done with some bonus features though... it was all over far too quickly (hence 4 rather than 5 stars).
