Brief synopsis of Garfield

The long-running, popular comic strip about the fat and lazy cat named Garfield comes to life with this live-action Hollywood comedy. Based on characters created by Jim Davis, the film tells the story of this supremely spoiled pet, who wants the affection of everyone around him, only he wants it on his own terms. Trouble arises one day when, under the influence of the beautiful veterinarian Liz (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Garfield's owner Jon (Breckin Meyer) stuns him by bringing home a cuddly dog, Odie. Jealous at the attention Odie is receiving, Garfield locks Odie out of the house. Odie runs away and when he's kidnapped by the evil television personality Happy Chapman (Stephen Tobolowsky), Garfield realizes his mistake, and embarks on a brave mission to rescue his new housemate. Bill Murray is a perfect choice to provide the loveable voice behind the computer-animated cat. Director Peter Hewitt keeps the story moving along at a clipped pace, which will ensure that children's attention spans won't be tested. Breezy and charming, GARFIELD is a nostalgic return to the past for older viewers who grew up with the fuzzy feline, and an engaging introduction for younger audiences who are meeting him for the very first time.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Jim Davis's fat-cat comic strip gets the big-screen treatment in this family comedy from Thunderpants director Peter Hewitt. In an inspired piece of casting, Bill Murray provides the voice of the sardonic, lasagne-loving feline, who here finds his lazy lifestyle threatened when owner Jon (Breckin Meyer) decides to adopt a dog to impress beautiful vet Liz (Jennifer Love Hewitt). It's a minuscule plot, and one that barely does justice to Garfield's infamous dry wit, but aimed squarely at a younger audience it works better than expected. As the movie's only CGI animal, the ginger moggy is far more realistic than that digital doggie Scooby Doo, which results in some fun sequences. Ultimately though it's the flesh and blood critters who steal the show — clumsy canine Odie never speaks a word, yet is a particular delight, while Garfield's kitty pal Nermal (voiced by Sex and the City's David Eigenberg) gets all the best lines.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A live-action movie with an animated cat that fans of the cartoon may enjoy; it's far from perfect though Bill Murray was an inspired choice to voice the smug feline.

If you are a bloke watching this (the Mrs hired it, honest) then it is pretty tedious, but getting to hear Sarah Michelle Geller talk is genius - I hear her voice for 90 mins and just get reminded of what a great rack she has. It will keep the kids occupied, the old folk will ooh and ahh, but best of all, you get to imagine what 90 minutes with the Gellermeister would be like. Worth a rental.

Garfield is your rudimentary children’s film – parents may judge it as OK but for some, the ending won’t come quick enough.

It dragged in parts, but the droll standpoint of Garfield makes it endurable if your kids are that set towards watching it. So unless you’ve got kids, I'd suggest giving it a wide birth.

What a really good film. Ok so there isnt much of a story the acting is not great but then the aim was not to win an Oscar with this type of film. Garfield and Odie are brill, there is enough adult humour to laugh at and anybody under eight will feel as if their sides are going to split.

We have had to go out and buy the DVD for the kids. If you have under eights in your house rent it NOW!!

Thought it was very good film, although not being a great fan of the cartoon Garfield the first time round, they did a pretty good job on the film. Very entertaining, funny and for a easy film to watch this is ideal, no complicated story. Kids were glued to the screen.

Rated - 4 starsGreat Film for kids and kids at heart

I have never been a fan of either the comic strip or for that matter cats themselves. However, this is a good film with lots of comic moments and has a great feel good factor.

It's a nice film to sit back and enjoy with the kids.
