Brief synopsis of Envy

Sensible, hardworking Tim is climbing the managerial ladder, while daydreamer Nick can't seem to stay focused on the tasks at hand. But all of that changes when one of Nick's seemingly hairbrained ideas--a spray that makes dog poop disappear--takes off, making him filthy rich. Rather than leaving the neighborhood and his best friend, Nick turns his home into a mansion and his property into a veritable amusement park. Tim, meanwhile, laments his decision not to invest in Nick's invention early in the game, and his life begins to fall apart as envy takes over. This dark comedy directed by Barry Levinson (AVALON, TIN MEN) also stars Amy Pohler and Rachel Weisz. But it's Christopher Walken who is the real scene-stealer as a bizarre hippie-bum who befriends Tim when he's down and out, only adding to the mayhem.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

This Barry Levinson-directed comedy was hanging around on the shelf until the success of Jack Black in The School of Rock thankfully freed it from potential obscurity. Ostensibly, it's the tale of two best friends/neighbours/co-workers, Tim Dingman (Ben Stiller) and Nick Vanderpark (Black). The duo's lives are turned upside down when Nick comes up with a revolutionary idea for a substance that makes dog excrement disappear into thin air: the appropriately named “Vapoorizer”. Tim turns down the chance to invest in the product so, when his buddy becomes a multi-millionaire, their relationship follows the doo-doo into oblivion, as Stiller is eaten up by an all-consuming envy. With the comic calibre of Stiller and Black on parade (as well as an almost obligatory Christopher Walken cameo), you'd think this would be a cast-iron laugh-fest. But, despite the undoubted talent of the leads, it's a comedy that offers titters rather than belly laughs, with Black, in particular, in unusually restrained mode.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Misfiring movie in need of comic invention; its tone veers between slapstick and sinister.

One of those films where you look at each other and wonder where the 'plot' is going. The answer is it goes nowhere. The film finishes and your patience isn't rewarded.

Rated - 1 starsDon't rent this movie!

I had high expectations for this movie - with a cast like Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Christopher Walken how could you go wrong?

Unfortunately this has gone very very wrong. This movie fails on every level. I can forgive a movie for being a bit dull but this film manages to be incredibly annoying as well. So much so that I was cursing myself for seeing it through to the end hoping that it MUST surely get better. It doesn't - it gets worse.

The movie is weird, unfunny, annoying and certain parts of it look ad-libbed - badly.

I advise Ben Stiller or Jack Black fans to avoid this movie at all because it just might stop you wanting to see any of their future movies.

Seriously.

This is not one for Jack Black or Ben Stiller fans... This film is awful. It should have been a morale tale about 2 friends. Which is full of side split gags and goofs when that one becomes jealous of the other, when he strikes it rich with his vapoo rise spray.

The problem is that, the morale tale is aimmed at the really young, or extremely stupid, BUT WORSE, they forgot to put the gags in at all.

I'm a big, big fan of both Jack(Black) and Ben(Stiller), but this movie SUCKED.

Rent something else, anything else.
