Brief synopsis of The Firm

Sydney Pollack directs Tom Cruise in this legal thriller based on John Grisham's best-seller. Cruise plays Mitch McDeere, an ambitious young lawyer who accepts an unmatchable offer from a Memphis law firm only to discover that the deal was too good to be true. As he becomes tangled in a web of deceit, Mob connections, and FBI investigations, he struggles to escape with his integrity--and his life.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

After running rings around the US Navy in A Few Good Men, Tom Cruise returns to the courtroom for this big-screen adaptation of John Grisham's bestseller. The result is a lavish, star-studded legal thriller, which at times seems as if it is going to last as long as the OJ Simpson trial, but is never less than engrossing. Cruise is a rising young lawyer who gets a dream job with a prestigious law firm only to discover that it offers more than just legal advice to one particularly sinister client. The ever excellent Gene Hackman is his jaded superior, but, as good as they are, the two stars are outshone by the seemingly never-ending parade of star supporting turns (Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, David Strathairn, Hal Holbrook and an unbilled Goodfellas reprise from Paul Sorvino). Director Sydney Pollack is as proficient as usual and just about manages to sustain the suspense throughout, even though the subject matter is fairly dry.

Rating of 1

An attention-holding thriller for the most part, though its conclusion, diverging from the tougher stance of the novel, is unsatisfactory.

Variety

"...A very smooth adaptation of John Grisham's giant bestseller....[The] supporting cast is stellar indeed..."

OK... I know this is an old film, but I still wanted to express my disappointment at a very poor adaptation of an excellent book.

I am an avid reader, and have found John Grisham to be a clever and imaginative writer. I am also an avid film buff, and was hoping for so much more.

When I finished reading the book recently, I immediately rented the film to re-live the experience - however I found myself picking holes in the storyline, which had lost most of the imaginative flair that resides in the book.

I just hope that the adaption of Dan Browns "Da Vinci Code" is better!

good film, nearly as good as teh book but was abit short off the brilliance the book had, good to watch, lots of suspence twists and turns in teh plot, if you've not read teh book, you'll love this film but if you've read teh book first like i have it don't do the book justice, but not many films do,

An enjoyable thriller in which Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise) graduates law school to recieve a once in a lifetime offer from a prestigeous firm. Even when he and wife Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn) arrive the sinister side of 'the firm' is apparent and amidst many twists and turns, Mitch is approached by the FBI concerning 'the firm' and has to choose whether to stay with them or help the FBI. Not particularly testing for the actors (Gne Hackman as Avery being the best performance) but an enjoyable film.

Rated - 1 starssurprise surprise! Another drab grisham adaptation

ATfilmcritic from London , 25/06/2005

Average courtroom thriller which makes several bad changes to Grisham’s original novel, particularly at the end.

A fantastic jazz soundtrack is one of the few truly good things in a bland and overlong movie, not even given a breath of life by its star-studded cast.
