Based in New York at the dawn of the twentieth century, this tells the story of the Nolans, a struggling Brooklyn tenement family. Based on Betty Smith's best-selling novel.

Not Elia Kazan's 1945 classic about family values at risk, but a TV-movie remake that labours to make the same points about the deserving poor. There are fine performances, however, notably from Diane Baker, as the Mother Courage of the lower orders, and Cliff Robertson as the alcoholic head of the family and occasional breadwinner. Unfortunately, there's not much of the original's flair.

A vastly affecting film

Although this film was made 60 years ago, it has not dated and is an absolute classic. I would urge anyone who has never seen it to watch it.

What I love about writing reviews on this website, is ironically, not writing reviews. The plot can be seen directly above so it's down to us groovy filmsters to either enhance or insult a piece of cinema.

In light of the above,I'll keep it brief.......this film is magnificent.the acting, direction,script....I'm sorry I have to stop..... the tears are pouring into my keyboard, I want to move to America and marry Dorothy Maguire.

A touching family story too. Elia Kazan made his name as a great film director.

An ordinary family surviving as best they can in the Brooklyn of 1912.

Superb performances--excellent script--gritty, funny, sad all rolled into one.

Don't make them as they used to!
