Halliwell's Film Guide

American remake of a repetitious horror movie that gains nothing from its bigger budget and English-speaking actors; its involved narrative structure, in which time is frequently out of joint, adds only confusion.

Rated - 4 starsSuperior American Remake

This film has received mixed reviews from people in the Media with the likes of Hotdog magazine giving it 4 out of 5 while News of the World only give it 1. Depending on which of these two titles you are more likely to agree with will go a long way on deciding whether this film is for you.

Remade from a Japanese horror film of the same name and by the same director, The Grudge represents a new type of sub-genre yet to hit the West. Rather than go for the out and out shocks of its American counterparts The Grudge builds up the tension with strange occurrences and non-linear storyline.

I personally felt it was the scariest film I have seen for a long time and would recommend it to not only Japanese film fans but also horror fans. Probably one to miss though if you are not a fan of a more leisurely paced film.

My freinds told me this film was rubbish, but I wanted to see it for myself because I thought it looked good and I have to say I think my friends are all wrong.

I am not the type of person who scares easily and usually think horror films are rubbish or find them funny but this scared the pants off me, I was hiding behind my cushions at some parts and it scared me for days afterwards. My boyfriend kept on mimicking the noises from the film and I think I actually hit him one time Because he made me jump.

I would get it and make up your own mind.

I had heard good things about this movie, but I found myself totally disappointed. The movie is scary in places, but this is simple quick shocks, rather than something which give you nightmares. The characters are, at best, 2 dimensional, tired and cliched. The story is fairly weak, no twists or turns in plot, just a convoluted method for revealing what has already happened. On the plus side the disc is shiny and you may well be able to use it to put on your makeup/rearrange your toupe.

'The Ring' vs. 'The Grudge' - watch the video and die, enter the house and die. Both are based on Japanese originals; both aren't particularly engrossing - although they do instill horror in many. It's watchable but not entertaining or groundbreaking.

Not exactly a horror film but watching it with all the lights off on your own will certainly make you jump first time around, as for watching it again it would wear a bit thin
