Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Catherine Deneuve won the best actress prize at Venice for her performance as an alcoholic widow recovering her sense of worth in this mannered thriller from actress-turned-director Nicole Garcia. While her icy detachment and vulnerability are impressive, there's no real sense of danger underlying this tale of duplicitous diamond dealing. Evading industry regulators, Russian mafiosi and the lover who once betrayed her (Jacques Dutronc), Deneuve's attempts to sell the stolen gems left by her husband are not without intrigue. Yet, even with the dogged loyalty of disbarred lawyer Jean-Pierre Bacri and some neat circularity involving Dutronc's mistress, Emmanuelle Seigneur, the plot sparkles all too rarely.

Sort of what you expect: good acting across the board, pleasure to see Deneuve in a classic role and Dutronc in a role, but story is a tad too predicatble and flat.

The story is plain, characters' emotions are contained. Couldn't watch it until the end.

Rated - 4 starsA great thriller

JNT from Bourne End , 13/12/2003

A very cleverly crafted story keeps the audience guessing. The direction provides just the right pace to allow the quality of the performaces to be savoured while pushing the story along. It gives the impression that the whole of the diamond business is crooked. Who knows whether this is true or not. But after watching it one is bound to look at a fellow passenger on a London - Antwerp flight in a completely different light.

Of course, for Deneuve fans this film is a must. She gives one of her vintage performances and is as ever a delight to watch.

A thoroughly absorbing and enjoyable film.
