Rated - 4 starsClassic costume drama

This wonderfully leisured, sumptuously staged BBC dramatisation of Anthony Trollope's Palliser novels is a real treat for anyone yearning for an age (the 1970s) when TV drama sought to create a unique, intimate literary experience rather than small screen cinema. Because the pace is slower, we come to know the characters all the more deeply and their triumphs and tragedies resonate in a way few modern dramas - for all their busyness - could ever emulate. If you want melodrama, look elesewhere. If you want a wise and entertaining human drama, give The Palisers a try.

Rated - 5 starsWell worth working your way through this classic!

Brilliant! Although made in the 1970s, we found this as entertaining as any costume drama made today, even without the benefit of some of today's sophistication. It has the added benefit of being taken at a slightly slower pace so you can really appreciate the dialog and acting - today I am sure this would have been compressed by at least half.

Despite showing its age in its production, the dramatisation is a good one and the acting is of a high standard. I have read the books that the series is based on and it's a cracking story.
