Rated - 4 starsA satisfying end to an almost perfect costume drama

srb from Richmond , 04/02/2006

The final episodes of this classic 1970s Trollope adaptation introduce some marvellous new characters including an out-and-out villain (Stuart Wilson), his canny father-in-law and a sleazy business partner. The highly principled Plantagenet Palliser (Philip Latham) has risen even higher in politics but becomes embroiled in an unfortunate scandal. The young Palliser heir, Silverbridge (Anthony Andrews, whose best friend is Jeremy Irons, Brideshead-style) has now reached the age where he can - and does - bring disgrace upon the family, throwing away money and mixing with the wrong people. If you've enjoyed the earlier series, the final one won't disappoint you, though the very end ties up the threads in a surprisingly low-key, even melancholy way. The only disappointing note in the last episodes was in the casting of Lynne Franks who wasn't convincing as the spirited, independent American object of Silverbridge's affections.

Rated - 4 starsshowing up politics & the class system

A customer from Norwich , 15/12/2007

Produced in 1974 for the BBC, this very long series was shown. How TV has now deteriorated in a lot of ways. The drama portrays Victorian Political and social life in the upper classes.Highlighting such issues as tthe importance of maintaining the class system through suitable marriages, showing up the hypocrisy of the Liberal party at the time ,which advocated equality to all people. A rich tapestry of lives are interwoven in the political theme of this drama.
