Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

This spaghetti western from master chef Sergio Leone was originally called Duck, You Sucker!, a title that is perhaps more in tune with the film's jokey intentions. Rod Steiger stars as a peasant who becomes involved with fugitive IRA explosives expert James Coburn and the Mexican Revolution. There's nothing really funny about Coburn as a walking arsenal, but Leone manages more laughs than you'd expect, thanks to his actors' unexpected gift for deadpan comedy.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Overblown action spectacular, far too long to be sustained by its flashes of humour and excitement. A good instance of what happens to a small talent when success goes to its head.

At the centre of A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE are two wonderful performances by Coburn and Steiger and they create the most rounded and sympathetic characters in any of Leone's movies

A tale of comradeship, betrayal, violence, earth shattering explosions, politics, humour, quirky accents, heartache, grief, prejudice - all linked via a powerful and haunting theme tune and set amidst the backdrop of the Mexican revolution

Unlikely pairing of a wanted IRA revolutionary (James Coburn) on the run in Mexico and a crude bandito (Rod Steiger) who hopes their partnership will make him a riche bandito.

Cast in the same mould as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly but with more humour.

Rated - 3 starsThe dynamite's occasionally soggy

Tinderbox from England , 14/07/2004

Sandwiched between two of Sergio Leone's most infamous epics ("Once Upon A Time In The West"/"...America") it's understandable why "A Fistful of Dynamite" occupies such an under-rated place in the director's filmography.

But for the most part, "...Dynamite" is an enjoyable spaghetti western with an overt political agenda. Stripped of the usual Leone operatic and infused with tons of crackling dialogue, the film centres around revolutionaries in Mexico. Revolutions are bloody affairs, and Leone is as critical of meaningless blood-spilling as well as the oppression of the ruling classes.

Despite a fantastic opening sequence, though, Leone has difficulty keeping up the pace for all of the film's 140 minutes. It's still definitely worth seeing, even though it doesn't entirely successfully combine the black humour of the opening half with the cold tragedy of the second.

Rated - 3 starsAverage Leone, not classic

Melon from East Sussex , 06/05/2005

This is a lesser known Sergio Leone movie, and not up to the standard of his other masterpieces. There are great moments, and Steiger and Coburn have a lot of fun with their parts, but the humour often jars with the political message and overall there is a disjointed feel to everything. At times it almost seems amateurish, especially in comparison with Leone's other work. It's fun, but no classic by any stretch of the imagination.

I quite Liked this film despite some of the negative reviews , if you are a fan of "Spaghetti Westerns" then you will know what to expect.

A film By 'Sergio Leone' Starring the Late great 'James Coburn' & 'Rod Steiger' Has To Be Good And this is, its just not great.
