Brief synopsis of Story Of O

A young woman learns the pleasure of totally subjugating her body to the man she loves. Based on Pauline Reage's best-selling erotic novel printed in 23 countries.
"Story Of 'O'" is based on the hugely successful S&M novel that has been read by millions of people worldwide. The author Pauline Reage tells the story of a beautiful young woman known only as 'O' who is taken by her boyfriend Rene to a chateau just outside Paris. There 'O' is trained in bondage and sexual perversion. 'O' is deeply in love with Rene and in order to prove her love she allows herself to be subjected to all kinds of degradation and abuse. Finally, Rene discharges a personal debt by transfering possession of 'O' to his stepbrother Sir Stephen.
In the film which produced in 1975, Just Jaeckin the director explores the cruel world in which 'O' finds herself. A world of sado-masochism and kinky and bizarre sexual practices.
The film was refused certification when it was originally submitted, has now been passed uncut by the British Board Of Film Classification.

This tale of a woman who becomes a willing slave to the men she loves was banned in the UK for 25 years, though it's debatable these days as to what's more shocking — Corinne Cléry's sexual subservience or Udo Kier's flared Cerruti trousers. Dramatising the controversial sadomasochistic novel by Pauline Réage, Emmanuelle director Just Jaeckin takes a dreamy, soft-focus, shampoo commercial approach to the sexual content, though it remains eye-opening. The addition of then-fashionable feminism — by withstanding all the pain and humiliation her lovers dish out, O proves herself stronger than they are — barely excuses the exploitative tableaux. However, Jaeckin's often unintentionally funny erotic epic stands as a seventies landmark that blurred the soft- and hard-core imagery of its “anything goes” era.

Apparently based on a controversial French novel, this is a soft core film with strong sado-masochistic elements and lesbian action. A young woman is so much in love with her boyfriend that she takes pleasure in submitting to a series of S&M humiliations. Like most porn, it gets a bit repetitive and tedious at times, but the production values are high and there are some seriously dishy women in it.

I was fully expecting this film to be a sorry excuse for 1970s French soft-core porn. But I was pleasantly surprised! The story is actually kind of interesting, and the cinematography is rather creative at times. Most of the acting is adequate, and surprisingly effective and ?O? played by Corinne Clery was an absolute peach.

Hi,

This the UK censored version. It has been that badly censored that at some point it create story line error, due to the parts missing.

The movie is (baldy?) ageing but try to get the uncensored version (as broadcasted on filmfour or available as import DVD).

Rated - 1 starsConfusing psychosexual drama

After the visually stunning opening title sequence I rapidly became confused by what appeared to be a serious and well directed film with no point.

Based on the classic Freudian-erotic novel by Pauline Reage (most widely translated French novel) the original French version was a well received adaptation, but unfortunately for the UK/US distribution it was widely cut removing most of the plotlines in the process rendering the film almost incomprehensible.

For admirers of the book this will be a worthwhile view, but for others it is just titillation without any point as the woman “O” pleases her husband.
