Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Although virtually unrecognisable from Pat Barker's source novel Union Street, this well meaning blue-collar drama is carried by striking performances from Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda. De Niro plays the uneducated factory worker who is slowly drawn out of his shell by a fellow worker, recently widowed Fonda. Martin Ritt's direction is curiously anonymous and if it wasn't for the cast, this would be little more than just another “issue of the week” TV movie. However, the two stars are on top form and the supporting players — Martha Plimpton, Swoosie Kurtz, Harley Cross — can't be faulted, either.

This is my mother in law's number one film and she insisted I order it for her to watch at our house. I was suprised to find that I found the film very entertaining.

The film completely revolves around the two central characters played by Fonda and De Niro. As the film progresses and the characters develop you are drawn to feel for the struggle of De Niro to overcome his limitations. In the end I was as gripped as the wife and her mother in watching this film. A good film also to make the kids watch, then they may realize just how important school really is.

Absolutely love this film! Robert de Niro is fab in anything (and just a little bit hot!) and I think he excelled in this. He plays an illiterate cook in a bakery factory who gets fired when his boss finds out. He can't get a decent job and he's forced to put his elderly father, with whom he lives, into a home as he can't afford to pay the rent (Cue tears!). He finally swallows his pride and asks a woman (played by Fonda) who works in the factory to teach him to read and write which she reluctantly does. This poor woman has domestic issues of her own but takes de Niro under her wing.

Best line in the movie? When Fonda goes thru the alphabet and asks for a word beginning with 'w' and de Niro looks at her and says 'woman'. Swoon!!

It might be a bit sugary for some but I think it's fab!
