Brief synopsis of What Planet Are You From?

The comic story of an alien, H-1449-6 (Shandling - THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW), sent to Earth to impregnate a human woman as part of a fiendish plot to conquer the Universe. Assuming the identity of Harold Anderson, he attempts to blend into human society (Phoenix, AZ to be exact) and begin his search for a mate. However, coming from a planet with no women and armed with a handful of inept pick-up lines and an automated reproductive unit (which emits a loud hum at the slightest titillation), he's rather ill equipped for the task at hand. But with the assistance of a philandering co-worker (Kinnear - AS GOOD AS IT GETS), Harold sets his sights on the beautiful, slightly flaky real-estate agent Susan Hart (Bening - AMERICAN BEAUTY), and sparks begin to fly in this hilarious battle of the sexes from the director of THE GRADUATE.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

When is Greg Kinnear going to tire of playing smarmy love rats? He's at it again in Gary Shandling's hugely disappointing big screen debut, but at least he provides a welcome distraction from the film's only joke — a humming penis. Clearly uneasy with Shandling's screenplay, director Mike Nichols resorts to stuffing the action with cameos from the likes of Ben Kingsley, Linda Fiorentino and John Goodman. But there's just no escaping Shandling's timid alien and his bid to seduce recovering alcoholic Annette Bening in order torepopulate his planet. Crude, crass and utterly devoid of Nichols's usually assured comic touch.

Halliwell's Film Guide

The question should be: what made them make this? Presumably Shandling, as producer, could hire himself as writer and star, but it's difficult to understand why talented people should have got involved in this witless, sniggering silliness.

Straighter than Larry Sanders but funny nonetheless. Worth a watch.

Rated - 4 starsNear perfect restrained comedy

Gary Shandling and Annette Bening are superb and are perfectly cast. (Only an ageing Linda Fiorentino seems miscast.)

Some killer lines - not least Ben Kingsley's "You appear intelligent, but when you open your mouth, the effect is spoiled" (delivered in an ultra-English accent).

Some great visual comedy - especially Shandling's character wacking his humming penis at the airport.

"Christmas has come early."
