Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Expanded from his own play by Robert Harling, this comedy drama provided juicy roles for some of Hollywood's leading ladies at a time when muscle-bound action heroes held sway at the box office. Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts interact so beautifully as they discuss men, the menopause, manicures and marriage in Dolly Parton's kitsch small-town beauty salon that it was something of a surprise that only Roberts scooped an Oscar nomination. But it's Shirley MacLaine as the town's outsider (complete with her headstrong mutt) who steals the show with a wonderful display of crankiness and compassion, and just a little flirtatiousness thrown in for good measure. Director Herbert Ross times every gag and tear to perfection, but he fails to find enough for the guys to do, which is a shame as Tom Skerritt, Sam Shepard and Dylan McDermott are all good enough actors to give strong performances without having to hold centre stage. This is a little too dependent on sassy one-liners and is awash with sentiment by the end, but is still wonderful entertainment.

Slickly made, sentimental account of marriage and motherhood that provides some meaty roles for the assembled actresses.

An odd combination of actors and actresses but they definitely gel well together. The story of friendship, love and the mother daughter relationship.

This story takes place mainly in one location, the hair salon. Shelby (Julia Roberts) is getting married and her mother (Sally Field) can't quite let her go. Her daughter is sick but she lives life to the full.

A wonderful girly film that is packed full of laughs. It will leave you with very wet eyes but also a smile on your face.

I found it alright, but really didn't get involved. Although there were numerous big named actresses the characters let them down.

Rated - 5 starsGreat rainy day chick flick

I love this movie and could watch it over and over again. Fields and Roberts not to mention the golden oldies in this one give some of their most memorable performances yet.

Gut wrenchingly sad in parts and hillariously funny in others, there is something here for everyone.

This is a pleasant viewing with some good acting by Sally Field - a bit of a weepy - but a nice 'girlie ' film
