Brief synopsis of Love And Basketball

LOVE AND BASKETBALL is the powerful story of two next-door neighbors in Los Angeles who grow up loving basketball and, eventually, each other. Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) have wanted to be basketball stars since they were kids. Monica has had to work hard to establish herself as a presence, while Quincy was born with natural star potential. As the two struggle to reach their goals of playing professionally, they must also deal with their feelings for each other.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps are young athletes with a lifelong love of basketball and each other. The movie follows them from childhood games to professional careers, all the while contrasting the different challenges men and women face while playing the same sport. Gina Prince-Bythewood's feature debut captures the characters' passion for the game, though she struggles with scenes that take place off the court. While Lathan delivers a passionate, star-making performance, her fellow actors are hobbled by underdeveloped roles, with even Alfre Woodard fighting to rise above cliché in her role as Lathan's homemaker mom.

Entertainment Weekly

"...Breaks away from other sports-themed dramas, thanks to the clarity and dash of Prince-Bythewood's agile directorial style and the exciting originality of the subject..." -- Rating: A-

Halliwell's Film Guide

A movie that questions some masculine assumptions about feminine roles, but mainly is content to get by on its slight charm.

Rated - 2 starsYou can have both - love and basketball...

... or whatever your passion happens to be.

This was a good movie and the acting was really good as well. The storyline was predictable but okay and the intimate scene set a good example!

Having seen The Best Man, Brown Sugar and Disappearing Acts I'm kind of fed up with seeing the same people every time I pick a blackflick. It was good to see Denis Haysbert and Alfre Woodard, though as I've always admired their acting.

The movie is about a boy and girl aged about 11 who grow up as childhood sweethearts but break up in their adult life due, according to the guy (Omar Epps), to the fact that the girl (Sanaa Lathan) has such a passion for basketball that she doesn't have enough time for him. He dumped her rather cruelly and in an immature way.

Personally if it were real life I'd say she should have dumped him ages ago (too many mood swings) and carried on with Jason her prom date (Boris Kodjoe - much better looking anyway!). But then she got pretty moody herself sometimes so maybe they deserved each other!

Brilliant. The outfits, the music even the hair matched the time frames this movie was set in. I think we all know someone this has happened to. It left me with a warm positive, go for it, feeling.

This is actually more of a chick flick than a basketball film, but the bases around the live and love of the two main characters actually revolves around there love for the american sport. Omar Epps (one of my fave actors) plays the part of Q well. The film is a chick flick gone wrong in the fact that it is actually worth watching

A classic or should be an excellent view loved every minute, would reccomend this to all, doed not just appeal to african americans/black people, a love story which is definately a must see, not a stero type.
