Rated - 5 starsExcellent movie

A customer from Manchester , 07/04/2005

I really enjoyed this movie. A friend of mine had shown me a preview for it before the movie was released in Japan and I made it a goal to find the movie once it was released on DVD.

The movie has a fairly elaborate plot and has a few little twists here and there. The action scenes are very good and the graphics are excellent. The plot gets a little confusing in a couple of points but overall the plot isn't too hard to figure out.

I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is really into sci-fi action films and doesn't mind reading subtitles.

The entire film is set against a blue back screen just like Sky Captain but don't let that dissuade you from renting or even buying this film. Definately one to add to your collection.

10/10 for a very entertaining movie.

Rated - 1 starsAvoid - Confused and dull

A customer from Manchester, UK , 03/06/2005

Overblown, pretentious, dull, confused and simplisticly preachy. You end up neither caring about the characters or the outcome of the film. There's no tension or character development and the plot, while essentially one dimensional, tries to appear clever by confusing the viewer with frequent jumps. The special effects, which don't always convince, are unable to carry the film's shortcomings. Avoid - it's dreadful.

Rated - 1 starsOverblown, tedious, and ridiculous

Jon from London , 01/06/2005

This over-extended, pretentious and incomprehensible Japanese sci-fi film is one of the worst films I've seen in a long time - even worse than the equally silly Battle Royale 2. It takes itself VERY seriously, and has a complicated plot with a preachy anti-war message. There's little point trying to sum up the content, which is vaguely reminiscent of but even less well thought-out than the Matrix: you'll stop caring about the ludicrous 'characters' after about twenty minutes, and after two hours if you'll be praying for the end. It's way too long, humourless, and features showoff, irritating direction (cartoonish CGI effects, random switches to monochrome, rapid jarring cuts). For something so obviously expensive this is really, really awful.

Rated - 3 starsGiant... robots. Nuff said.

adiw from Leicestershire [Highly rated reviewer] , 17/02/2005

Anyone still doubting that CGI deserves a place in modern movie making may want to check out this truly epic tale from Asia because for sheer scope and beauty Casshern deserves to find a massive cult following. Based on a popular Manga TV series this latest sci-fi spectacular is a feast for the eyes, so much so in fact that it may even make your eyes bleed. In a good way of course.

Very similar in style to Sky Captain, Casshern truly is a movie experience like no other. On a visual level at least. Because just like it's source material, Casshern is way to congested to be deemed a masterpiece. So much is crammed in to two and a half hours that character development and many intriguing storylines are picked up and put down without even a moments thought, leaving the senses wandering and the emotions cold.

Still, even if the movie does lose you two thirds of the way in there is still so much to enjoy that it's a film you'll want to revisit again and again. And I didn't even mention the giant robots!

Rated - 2 starsPretty, but not much upstairs.

Huge robots! Fights in the sky! Macho posturing! Incomprehensible script! Casshern is an adaption of a classic japanese comic series which wasn't that easy to understand before they tried to cram all it all into a two hour film. If you wan't a stunning and original visual battering then this is for you - if you want to be able to understand what's going on, well, you'll be lucky!

Rated - 5 starsBrilliant

This film had me riveted from beginning to end, although I must confess to being a bit lost at times it did all come together for me in the end. I would highly recommend it, it seems to me to have a style of sky captain, matrix, metropolis and manga/anime type films.

It is simply a delight to the eye and senses.
