Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Screenwriter/director Tod Williams's tasteful, discreet drama is based on the first third of John Irving's novel A Widow for One Year. Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger star as Ted and Marion Cole, a couple whose teenage sons died in an accident some years ago. The tragedy has crushed the marriage — photographs of the boys line the hallway, suggesting the ever-present grief in the house — and not even the couple's four-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning, sister of Dakota) can ease their sorrow. Ted, a famous children's author, has descended into drinking and womanising, while Marion begins a relationship with her husband's 16-year-old assistant (Jon Foster). This is a mature, subtle and surprising drama that delicately examines the hidden pains of a marriage as well as the healing powers of intimacy.

Sunday Telegraph

Tod Williams' mournful, witty film is alive with sex and sorrow, and Bridges steals the show.

The Mirror

If gripping emotional dramas are your thing, this is a must-see film

After seeing this movie in the US I can safly say it is one of my favorite movies of all time. The acting is brillent and the film both comic and dramtic in places. Give it a try.

Rated - 4 starsBitter-Sweet Irving Tale

Peter Griffiths from Bristol , 16/07/2005

John Irving's stories are always worth reading and when combined with the fine acting of Jeff Bridges and a still-gorgeous Kim Bassinger who is also superb in this film, it is an irresistable combination. The story of a young man spending the summer with a writer of children's stories as the writer's marriage falls apart following a family tragedy, the story takes you on a ride which is both achingly sad and laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes in the same scene. Don't miss it.

Rated - 4 starsThe Best Irving Adaptation Yet ?

macmuff78 from London , 20/09/2005

Adapting only the most memorable section of John Irving's excellent "A Widow For One Year" enables writer/director Tod Williams to focus more on the characters and their relationships and makes for a more contained film than most Irving adaptations, which tend to have trouble coping with his sprawling, Dickensian, epics.

This is not the most action-packed of films, but it is a truly absorbing and intelligent psychological drama about loss, love and coming of age.
