Scripted by Malcolm Bradbury, John Schlesinger's film was originally intended for UK television, but ended up securing cinematic distribution in the US. Kate Beckinsale plays Flora Poste, an orphan in 1930s England who is sent off to live with her distant rural relatives, the Starkadders. Instead of sinking into a deep depression, Flora sets about sorting out her mad kin (Eileen Atkins, Rufus Sewell, Ian McKellen). Based on the novel by Stella Gibbons, this dotty, very British comedy is a real treat.

Enjoyable comedy that doesn't quite capture the flavour of the original satire or the high and rural romanticism of Mary Webb's novels.

Very probably the funniest book ever written - A brilliant novel along classic lines.

Rated - 4 starsTongue in cheek hilarity

This made me laugh all the way through - splendidly diverting. If you like the silly dialogue and wit of PG Wodehouse and Oscar Wilde then I think you'll probably like this a lot.

It's based on the novel written by Stella Gibbons as a pastiche of the pastoral novel and is thus very tongue in cheek.

The cast is very impressive and have an excellent pedigree. It's fun to spot them all. Everyone plays their roles with relish but stand-outs have to go to Kate Beckinsale (who was funny and great before she became a Californian), Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry who deliver their lines brilliantly.

Good for a family afternoon with tea and crumpets!

What a delight to watch a whimisical film with such great characters and great acting. Everything was just right. It is well worth watching Robert Post's Child!

Rated - 5 starsBrilliant satire

Brilliant satire of town meets country with a gothic twist. Excellent performances by Eileen Atkins and Kate Beckinsale and the added panache of Joanna Lumley.
